Chapter 12 - The First Breath

Back at St. Jude’s, a very different celebration was underway.

After eighty-four grueling days in the NICU, baby Grace had crossed the five-pound threshold. She had graduated from the ventilator to a nasal cannula, and finally to breathing independently without assistance. Her medical team gathered in the hallway, clapping as Maya and Tyler dressed their daughter in a soft yellow onesie for the very first time.

"Look at those cheeks," Dr. Charles said, signing the discharge papers with immense satisfaction. "She’s got healthy lungs and an unbreakable spirit. Take her home, Officer Vance. Your family has earned this homecoming."

Walking through the sliding glass doors of the hospital, Tyler carried the car seat while Maya walked proudly beside him, holding a small bouquet of wildflowers given to them by the nursing staff.

The world outside was vibrant. The trees were blooming with mid-summer blossoms, and the humid breeze felt warm against their skin. When Tyler secured the car seat in the back of their modest crossover SUV, he paused, looking down at his daughter’s sleeping face. Grace let out a soft, contented sigh, her small hands resting gently against her chest.

"We did it, Maya," Tyler murmured, wrapping his arm around his wife’s waist.

"No," Maya replied softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Love did it. Truth did it."

They drove away from the hospital, leaving behind the sterile corridors of fear, heading toward the modest suburban home they had built with their own honest earnings.
