Chapter 9 - The Ledger of Lies

While Maya recovered and their daughter—named Grace—fought for every breath in the incubator, the justice system moved forward with relentless momentum.
Detective Lin and the forensic accounting unit spent a week dismantling Eleanor Vance’s financial web. The evidence was damning. In addition to the security camera footage capturing the brutal attack, investigators discovered emails between Eleanor and an unscrupulous offshore wealth manager detailing plans to flee the country if the trust could not be unlocked.
The Grand Jury returned a multi-count indictment: Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery Causing Great Bodily Harm, Grand Larceny, and Securities Fraud.
Arthur Sterling, recognizing the impossibility of defending the indefensible, quietly withdrew as Eleanor's lead counsel after she refused to accept a plea agreement that included prison time. Eleanor remained convinced that her social status would insulate her from a jury of ordinary citizens.
Sitting with Maya, who was now awake and sitting up in bed, Tyler watched her carefully sip broth. Her physical bruises had darkened into deep purples and yellows, but the light had returned to her eyes.
"Have you seen Grace today?" Maya asked, her voice stronger.
"Every two hours," Tyler smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead. "The nurses say she digested her first milliliters of milk today. She has your stubbornness."

Maya smiled, then looked down at her lap. "Tyler... what happens to your family's estate now? The charities?"
"We are going to make it right," Tyler answered gently. "Every dollar Eleanor stole will be restored from my share of the inheritance. We will rebuild the foundations Father created. Our daughter will inherit a name defined by integrity, not exploitation."
