Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

Eleanor Vance sat in the stark holding cell of the county detention center. Stripped of her jewelry, dressed in coarse orange canvas, her aristocratic aura had begun to fray. Yet her pride remained an impenetrable fortress. When Tyler sat across from her behind the scratch-resistant glass, she offered no apology, only a glare of indignant betrayal.

"You have destroyed this family's standing forever," Eleanor spat into the receiver. "Over a girl from a blue-collar background who married you for a ticket out of poverty."

Tyler held the receiver, looking at the hollowed lines around his mother's eyes. "Maya never asked for a penny from father's estate. She works forty hours a week as a municipal auditor. She loves me. She loved you, Eleanor. She spent three weeks baking your favorite preserves for your birthday last month."

Eleanor scoffed. "She was auditing my books! She had no right to dig into the trust distributions!"

"You were stealing from the public charities Father endowed," Tyler revealed, his voice shaking with sorrow. "The shelter for homeless youth, the scholarship foundation for underprivileged kids. You siphoned over four million dollars to pay off bad margin calls and European luxury leases. Maya didn't discover it to hurt you; she found it while trying to protect our family from an IRS federal indictment."

Eleanor froze, the receiver trembling slightly against her ear.

"You didn't just try to kill my child, Mother," Tyler said, using the title with finality. "You tried to kill the only person who was trying to save you from prison. Now, you will face justice without a safety net."

He hung up the phone before she could reply, turning his back on the glass partition without looking back.
