Chapter 11 - The Serpent's Lair

The ancestral docks of the Castellan estate stood decrepit and weathered against the gray, turbulent ocean waters of Long Island Sound. Rain hammered mercilessly against the rusted tin roofs of the old boathouse, masking the subtle splash of Clara’s boots as she approached the main warehouse alone.

Behind her, hidden in the treeline with a high-caliber sniper rifle, Evelyn was already in position, monitoring the thermal heat signatures inside.

Clara pushed the creaking wooden door open. The interior smelled of salt, kerosene, and gunpowder. In the center of the warehouse, tied to an iron support pillar, sat Victoria Castellan, bruised and terrified, her once-glamorous red dress shredded into filthy rags. Across from her, sitting in a leather wingback chair under an umbrella, was Eleanor Castellan, holding a remote detonator in her liver-spotted hands. Beside her stood Julian Sterling, his shoulder crudely bandaged, pale and sweating from blood loss.

"Look who decided to be a hero," Julian spat, aiming an assault rifle at Clara with his good arm.

"Let Victoria go, Eleanor," Clara said, keeping her hands visible, holding the silver flash drive between her fingers. "She’s your own daughter."

"She’s an incompetent failure who couldn't even frame an amateur like you properly," Eleanor sneered, not sparing Victoria a glance. "Her stupidity ruined thirty years of planning. Throw the drive on the ground, Clara."

Clara took two slow steps forward. "You're surrounded, Eleanor. The FBI has dismantled your tunnel charges. Marcus is in a maximum-security interrogation cell. You have nothing left."

"I have this," Eleanor cackled, raising the detonator. "This warehouse is rigged with four hundred pounds of industrial C-4. If I die, we all burn together—including Arthur Vance’s precious bloodline!"

"You forgot one detail, Eleanor," Clara said softly, her eyes flicking toward the skylight above.

"What detail, you insolent brat?"

"My mother never misses."

A high-velocity round punched through the glass skylight with a deafening crack. Eleanor’s right hand vanished in a mist of red mist as the sniper bullet obliterated the detonator and her fingers instantly.

Eleanor shrieked, collapsing to the floor in agony. Julian swung his rifle upward to aim at the roof, but Clara drew her 9mm from beneath her coat in one blindingly fast draw.

Bang!

The bullet shattered Julian’s kneecap. He collapsed with an agonized scream, his rifle clattering across the concrete.

Clara stepped forward, kicking the weapon away, pressing the smoking barrel of her pistol against Julian’s forehead.

"Checkmate," Clara whispered.
