Chapter 12 - Echoes of Betrayal

Julian lay on the cold concrete, clutching his shattered knee, panting like a cornered animal. Blood pooled beneath Eleanor, who was writhing in silent, whimpering shock as the rain poured down through the shattered skylight onto her ruined face.
"Don't shoot!" Victoria sobbed hysterically from the pillar, tears leaving tracks of mascara down her dirty cheeks. "Clara, please! I didn't know she was going to blow up your workshop! She forced me to take the ring! She told me you would take my inheritance!"
Clara lowered the pistol slightly, looking at Victoria with cold disgust. "Your inheritance was built on stolen bones and blood money, Victoria. You threw away your dignity for a title that was already bankrupt."
Heavy boots pounded against the wooden planks outside. Agent Ross and Arthur Vance burst into the boathouse, followed by federal tactical teams with assault rifles raised.
"Area secure!" Ross commanded, kicking Julian’s weapons away and placing zip-ties around his wrists. "Paramedics, get in here for the wounded!"
Arthur rushed directly to Clara, grabbing her shoulders, checking her frantically for wounds. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"
"I’m fine, Dad," Clara sighed, letting the adrenaline drain from her limbs. She lowered her head onto his chest for a brief second, feeling the steady, protective beat of his heart. "It’s over."
"Not yet," Arthur said grimly, looking toward the dark treeline outside where Evelyn was packing her sniper gear. "The FBI raided Marcus Sterling’s private vault in Zurich an hour ago."
Clara looked up. "What did they find?"
"It wasn't just corporate sabotage, Clara," Arthur’s voice dropped to a grave, hollow rasp. "The files recovered date back twenty-five years. Marcus Sterling didn't start this war alone. There was a third family involved in your mother’s original ambush."
Clara frowned, cold dread creeping back into her spine. "Who?"
Before Arthur could answer, Evelyn appeared at the threshold of the boathouse, her rifle slung over her shoulder. But she was not alone. Behind her, held at gunpoint, was Lucas—Arthur’s head of security, the trusted bodyguard who had served the Vance family for over two decades.

Lucas was covered in mud, bleeding from his cheek, holding a detonator switch that hadn't fired.
"Arthur," Evelyn said, her eyes burning with pure rage. "You had a viper in your pocket the entire time."
