Chapter 14 - The Throne of Glass and Steel

Three weeks later.

The morning sun reflected brilliantly across the restored glass facade of Vance Global Headquarters in Manhattan. The media circus that had engulfed the city had finally calmed, leaving only the headline that dominated every financial newspaper on Earth: NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD CLARA VANCE CONFIRMED AS CO-CEO OF VANCE GLOBAL.

Inside the penthouse office, Clara stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows. She wore a tailored ivory silk suit, her blonde hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, her posture commanding and absolute. Across her desk sat hundreds of signed restructuring agreements.

The double doors opened, and Arthur walked in, carrying two cups of artisan coffee. He smiled warmly, the strain of previous weeks replaced by a deep, proud peace.

"Your mother left the country yesterday," Arthur said softly, placing a cup before her. "Interpol gave her safe passage under our private contract. She’s tracking down the remaining syndicate accounts in Zurich."

"She couldn't stay in one place," Clara said, taking a sip of the warm brew. "She belongs in the wind. But she left this on my desk this morning."

Clara picked up a small velvet box and opened it. Inside rested a polished silver signet ring—not bearing a serpent or a crescent moon, but an eagle soaring above a shield, the original coat of arms of her mother’s ancestral line.

"She gave you the Vanguard crest," Arthur murmured, respect echoing in his voice. "That means she recognizes you as the sovereign head."

"We purged the board," Clara said, changing to business, gesturing at the documents. "The Castellan estate has been liquidated to compensate the families affected by the workshop fire. Victoria is serving five years for conspiracy and perjury. Marcus and Julian Sterling will spend the rest of their lives in ADX Florence."

"And you, Madam CEO?" Arthur teased gently. "Are you ready for your first global shareholders' conference at noon?"

"I was born ready, Dad," Clara smiled.

Suddenly, her private desk terminal flashed red with an urgent, encrypted incoming video transmission. The sender’s location was masked through fourteen international proxies.

Arthur’s smile vanished. "Who has that private frequency?"

Clara frowned, tapping the screen to accept the feed.
