Chapter 9 - The Puppet Master's Shadow

The boardroom emptied rapidly as federal agents dragged Marcus Sterling out, kicking and screaming obscenities that echoed down the executive corridors. The board members bowed their heads in shame and terror, practically crawling on their knees as they exited, desperate to avoid Arthur Vance’s merciless gaze.
Only four people remained in the cavernous, glass-walled room: Clara, Arthur, Evelyn, and Agent Ross.
Clara ran into her father’s arms. The steel demeanor she had maintained throughout the morning shattered for a brief, breathless moment as Arthur held her tightly, kissing the crown of her head. "You did extraordinary, sweetheart. Better than I could have ever planned."
"You knew?" Clara asked, pulling back, looking up into his worn but resilient face. "You let them frame you?"
"I had to draw Marcus out of the shadows," Arthur admitted quietly. "He spent twenty years hiding behind shell companies and corrupt judges. The only way to eliminate him legally was to let him commit high treason on federal record."
Arthur then turned his gaze toward Evelyn. The air between the former husband and wife turned unbearably heavy. There was pain, unresolved grief, and decades of regret simmering in their silence.
"You came back," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave.
"I came back for my daughter," Evelyn replied coldly, holstering her weapon. "Not for you, Arthur. And our job isn't finished."
Agent Ross stepped forward, his face grave as he adjusted his tactical radio. "She’s right, Mr. Vance. We have Marcus in custody, but we just raided the secondary holding facility at the docks. Julian Sterling wasn't there."
Clara remembered the warehouse—the explosion, the knife Evelyn had planted in Julian’s shoulder. "He was wounded, bleeding out. He couldn't have gone far on his own."
"He didn't go on his own," Ross said, bringing up a live satellite feed on his mobile unit. "A private helicopter extracted him five minutes after you left the docks. It’s registered to Eleanor Castellan’s offshore estate."
Clara’s blue eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Eleanor. Victoria’s mother."
"Eleanor was never just a socialite mother," Evelyn said, loading a fresh magazine into her pistol. "She was Marcus Sterling's first wife, before they staged a divorce thirty years ago to build a shadow network. She controls the private mercenary arm."

Suddenly, the phone on the conference desk began to ring. Arthur hit speakerphone.
A woman's raspy, aristocratic voice purred through the line: "Hello, Arthur. Hello, little Clara. Did you really think destroying a few bank accounts would save you? Look out your south-facing window."
