Chapter 15 - The World Beyond the Horizon

The video feed flickered to life, showing not an empty threat or a corporate logo, but a dimly lit, luxurious room resembling a high-altitude boardroom somewhere in the Swiss Alps.
Seated at an oval table carved from dark stone were five masked individuals, each wearing tailored attire and silver rings bearing various predator insignias: a wolf, a hawk, a panther, a viper, and a lion.
The man wearing the lion mask leaned forward toward the lens, his voice heavily modulated to prevent identification.
"Bravo, Miss Clara Vance," the modulated voice purred with chilling politeness. "You dismantled the Sterling family in less than forty-eight hours. You proved yourself far more capable than your father, who spent twenty years hiding behind fake identities and soft diplomacy."
Arthur stepped beside Clara, his jaw tight as he stared at the screen. "The High Council. I thought I eradicated your syndicate twelve years ago."
"You eradicated our puppets, Arthur," the Lion replied with a cold chuckle. "Marcus Sterling was merely an ambitious collector. Lucas was an expendable tool. The Castellan family was nothing more than our social front in North America."
Clara leaned forward, placing both hands flat on her glass desk, her gaze piercing directly through the camera. "If you think your little masquerade frightens me, you're mistaken. I tore Marcus down with a single stroke of a pen. I can do the exact same to each of you."
The five masked figures remained completely still. Then, the Lion slowly stood up and raised a champagne flute toward the camera in a mockery of a toast.
"We don't want to destroy you, Clara Vance. We want to welcome you. The global economy is a chessboard, and a seat has just opened at our table. Marcus Sterling's seat."
The screen split, showing live satellite feeds of seven different global financial hubs: London, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, and New York. On every financial monitor across those exchanges, the name VANCE GLOBAL began blinking in synchronized amber alerts.
"You have forty-eight hours to accept your appointment to the High Council," the Lion said, his tone turning into an icy decree. "Refuse, and we will trigger the global sovereign debt protocol. We will not target your father. We will not target your mother. We will plunge three continents into total economic blackout, and the world will blame the Vance family."
The transmission abruptly severed into static, leaving Clara and Arthur staring at the black screen in the dead silence of the penthouse office.
Arthur reached for his secure phone to call federal defense, but Clara gently placed her hand over his.
"Clara?" Arthur looked at her, stunned.

Clara’s eyes were cold, calculated, and completely devoid of fear. A slow, chilling smile touched the edge of her lips as she slipped her mother's silver eagle signet ring onto her right index finger.
"Don't call the government, Dad," Clara said softly, her voice carrying the absolute weight of an empress going to war. "Book me a private flight to Zurich. It’s time I teach the Council what happens when you corner a Vance."
