Chapter 2 - The Fall of the First Pawn

The crimson dress that had once looked so striking now seemed like a shroud over Victoria’s shaking body. The glare of high-powered spotlights flooded the ballroom as heavily armed men secured every exit. Nobody was permitted to leave; nobody was even allowed to breathe loudly. Arthur Vance stood protectively before Clara, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder, feeling the faint, controlled pulse of his only daughter.
"M-Mr. Vance," Victoria choked out, her voice trembling like dry autumn leaves. "You... you don't understand. She took my diamond engagement ring! It's a Castellan heirloom! She was hired as a temporary designer and used the opportunity to rob us!"
Arthur didn't blink. He raised a subtle finger toward his head of security, Lucas, who stepped forward holding a sleek tablet. With a tap, the towering overhead screens—ordinarily reserved for charity auction visuals—flickered to life. Instead of art pieces, crystal-clear 4K surveillance footage appeared.
The video displayed Victoria half an hour earlier inside the private dressing lounge, frantically slipping a massive emerald-cut diamond ring into her own satin clutch behind an ornamental potted fern.
Gasps rippled violently through the crowd. Eleanor turned pale as ash, her withered hands shaking against her chest. "Victoria... what did you do?"
"It’s not what it looks like!" Victoria screamed, backing away until she hit the marble pillar. "She provoked me! She’s an outsider! She has no right to stand among us!"
"An outsider?" Arthur’s voice was softer than a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a funeral bell. "For eighteen years, I honored my late wife’s dying wish: to let Clara grow up away from the predators of high society, to let her learn the value of sweat and dignity before inheriting the Vance Empire."
The name dropped like an atomic bomb into the room. The Vance Empire. The international conglomerate that held seventy percent of the Castellan family’s commercial debt.
Arthur turned to his head of security. "Cancel every credit line extended to the Castellan Group. Liquidate their pledged assets by midnight. And call the District Attorney. I want grand larceny and corporate espionage charges filed within the hour."

Victoria collapsed to her knees, weeping pathetically onto the marble floor. But as two officers pulled her up, her face twisted in desperate madness.
"You think you’ve won, Clara?!" Victoria spat, blood dripping from her bitten lip. "You think this was just my idea? Check your father’s chest pocket, you stupid girl! Look at the ring inside his coat!"
