Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage

Cold concrete seeped chill into Clara’s bones. When she opened her eyes, the dazzling lights of the Castellan gala were gone, replaced by the flickering hum of an overhead fluorescent tube. Her hands were bound behind her back with coarse hemp rope, tied securely to a rusted iron chair.
"Awake at last, Princess?"
A man stepped into the dingy circle of light. He was young, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, with slicked-back raven hair and eyes like polished glass. Clara recognized him immediately from Forbes covers: Julian Sterling, the ruthless twenty-seven-year-old heir to the Sterling conglomerate.
"Julian," Clara said, her voice hoarse from the sedative. She tested the ropes; they were tight, cutting into her wrists. "I should have known Victoria didn't have the brains to orchestrate this alone."
Julian smiled faintly, resting a polished leather boot on an overturned wooden crate. "Victoria was merely an expendable idiot who thought she was securing a wealthy marriage. You, however, are a masterstroke. Do you know how long my father waited to find Arthur Vance’s hidden heir? Eighteen years. He hid you so well in that modest design school."
"My father will hunt you down," Clara warned, her eyes blazing without fear. "He will reduce your family to ashes."
"He would—if he were still in control," Julian chuckled coldly. He pulled out a sleek tablet and flipped it toward Clara.
On the live broadcast feed, Arthur Vance was being escorted out of Vance Tower by federal marshals in handcuffs. News tickers screamed across the bottom of the screen: ARTHUR VANCE ARRESTED FOR INTERNATIONAL MONEY LAUNDERING AND TREASON.
"The signet ring in his pocket contained a micro-transmitter loaded with forged classified state contracts," Julian murmured, leaning close enough that Clara could smell his expensive cologne. "The market opens in two hours. Vance Enterprises stock will plummet ninety percent. And to save his empire, your father must sign over all executive control to me."
Julian reached out, his thumb tracing the sharp curve of Clara’s jawline. "Or... you could sign the proxy forms yourself as his sole legal inheritor."
May you like
Clara stared straight into his arrogant eyes, swallowed the bile rising in her throat, and spat directly across his polished cheek.
Julian’s face went deadly still. Slowly, he wiped the spittle away with a silk handkerchief. But before he could raise a hand against her, the heavy metal door of the warehouse blew inward with an earth-shattering explosion.
