Chapter 3 - The SummonsBy Wednesday, the Hawthorne estate had descended into defensive maneuvering. Julian Hawthorne, Grant’s iron-willed father, summoned Evelyn to the family’s downtown legal offices, expecting the customary tearful settlement.

Evelyn arrived wearing a tailored slate-gray suit. She carried no purse, only a slim black folder.

Julian sat at the head of a mahogany boardroom table, flanked by three senior partners. "Evelyn, my dear," Julian began with manufactured warmth. "Emotions run high. Grant was reckless, yes, but family legacy survives individual lapses. Sign this nondisclosure agreement, and the Hampton estate is yours, along with an eight-figure stipend."

Evelyn didn't sit. She opened her folder and extracted a single sheet: Schedule C of Grant's private foundation.

"Your son didn't just violate our vows, Julian," she said, her voice steady and clear. "He used your medical charity to launder kickbacks for offshore real estate. If this hits the press, the Hawthorne name won't just be embarrassed. The SEC will freeze every trust account."

Julian’s face drained of color. The paper trembled in his hand.
