The society circles that had once fawned over the golden couple now treated the Hawthorne name like poison.
Evelyn stood in the vacant penthouse one last time, overseeing the movers. Grant was out on bail, confined to his father’s country house with an ankle monitor. He had sent her dozens of handwritten letters begging for an audience, claiming he still loved her, blaming his father's pressure for every misstep.
She left the stack of envelopes on the kitchen island, unopened, next to her diamond wedding band.
