Chapter 10 - New LifeIn March, Cynthia gave birth to a healthy girl named Clara.

True to her word, Evelyn visited the hospital in Vermont where Cynthia had relocated to live near her grandmother. The room was modest, filled with soft light and yellow knit blankets.

Cynthia held the baby gingerly, looking up as Evelyn entered. "I never said thank you properly," Cynthia whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You could have ruined me."

"Destroying you wouldn't have healed me," Evelyn answered gently. She looked at the infant sleeping peacefully in Cynthia's arms. "She deserves a mother who is free. That’s all that matters."

Before leaving, Evelyn deposited a college trust fund certificate into the crib, funded entirely in the child’s name, permanently shielded from any Hawthorne claim.
