Chapter 9 - The SentencingIn January, Evelyn traveled back to New York for Grant’s sentencing hearing. The courtroom was subdued, stripped of its initial media frenzy.

Grant sat hunched in a standard prison jumpsuit, his polished hair now dull and unkempt. When the judge sentenced him to seven years in federal prison with mandatory restitution, Grant turned his head toward the gallery. His gaze locked onto Evelyn.

There was no hatred left in her chest, only a profound, hollow pity. He had possessed wealth, intelligence, and legacy, yet traded them all for control and cheap vanity. When their eyes met, Evelyn did not glare or look away. She gave a single, calm nod of closure, stood up, and walked out before the marshals cuffed him.
