Chapter 15 - The Final BalanceThree years after the day she walked out of the hospital suite, Evelyn sat on the porch of her cottage, watching the morning mist burn off the harbor. The mail carrier dropped off a thick envelope containing the final legal closure: the Hawthorne bankruptcy estate had cleared its last restitution checks, and Grant's parole had been denied for lack of genuine rehabilitation.

She didn't feel triumph. She felt nothing toward that chapter except the quiet acknowledgment of a finished task.

Clara, now a bright-eyed toddler, ran across the grass toward her, giggling as Cynthia followed closely behind with a basket of fresh blueberries. Thomas emerged from the workshop, carrying two steaming mugs of coffee.

Evelyn picked up the ledger that had ruled her past life and placed it inside a storage chest, locking it for the final time. The ledger of broken promises was closed; her real life had just begun.
