Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The echo of Julian Vance’s voice lingered in the grand marble foyer like rolling thunder, shaking the very foundations of the Vance estate.
On the polished checkered floor, Clara Bennett knelt, trembling, her arms still locked in a protective arch over nine-month-old Theo. Her maid uniform was torn at the shoulder, a crimson split across her lower lip blooming against pale skin, her cheek swelling with a sickening purple bruise. Beneath her battered frame, Theo let out ragged, whimpering gasps, his tiny fingers clutching Clara’s starched apron as if she were the only anchor left in a merciless world.
Standing three feet away, Victoria Sterling caught her breath, her hand suspended in the air. The sculpted disdain on her face curdled into sudden panic. Julian did not move toward her. He did not shout again. Instead, his presence expanded, filling the cavernous room with a chilling, suffocating gravity.
He lowered himself to one knee beside Clara. For a fleeting instant, the cold tycoon whom Wall Street feared vanished. His hand, adorned with an immaculate gold watch, gently brushed over his son’s chest, feeling the frantic flutter of the boy’s heart.
""Julian, darling, wait,"" Victoria stammered, her voice pitching up into fragile, desperate haughtiness. ""She’s lying! The girl is completely unhinged. She dropped him—I was merely reprimanding her! You know how clumsy these hired hands are—""
Julian didn't turn around. His gaze swept over the laceration on Clara’s temple, the distinct imprint of heavy signet rings on her cheek, and the raw fear in his infant's tear-drenched eyes. Slowly, deliberately, Julian stood up.
""Pack your things, Victoria,"" he said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
""What? Julian, our engagement announcement is tomorrow! The merger between Sterling Corp and Vance Logistics—""
""You have five minutes to leave my home on your own two feet,"" Julian whispered, turning to face her with eyes like polished obsidian. ""Before I have security throw you out into the street like the feral creature you are.""
May you like
Victoria stared, realizing the veneer had broken beyond repair. Hissing a curse, she turned on her designer heels and fled toward the upper landing.
Julian immediately bent back down, scooping both Theo and Clara into his steady, outstretched arms.
