Chapter 10 - Building the Sanctuary

Spring arrived, breathing new life into the earth. The grounds of the Vance estate bloomed with vibrant tulips, and little Theo took his very first independent steps on the soft green lawn.
Meanwhile, Julian poured half of his personal liquid assets into making the Eleanor & Clara Foundation a reality. Rather than hiring impersonal contractors to manage the initiative, he made Clara the co-director of the inaugural project in upstate New York.
Together, they traveled to the construction site twice a week. Clara worked closely with pediatric specialists, psychologists, and educators, designing living spaces that felt like warm homes rather than sterile institutions. She insisted on oversized windows to let the sunlight in, reading nooks filled with soft cushions, and therapy gardens where abused children could plant seeds and watch them grow.
""You have an incredible eye for this, Clara,"" Julian remarked one afternoon as they reviewed the interior finishes of the first residential cottage. ""You understand what these kids need before the doctors even suggest it.""
""Because I know what it feels like to feel completely helpless,"" Clara answered honestly, looking out over the playground being installed outside. ""When my mother was sick, the world felt like a cold, indifferent machine. You feel invisible. When a child experiences violence, they lose the ability to trust reality itself. They need proof that the world has goodness in it.""

Julian stepped closer to her, his gaze intense and full of reverence. ""You give that proof to everyone around you, Clara. Including me.""
Clara looked up, her breath catching at the sincerity in his eyes. There were no corporate masks, no social games—only an honest man laying his heart bare before her.
