Chapter 15 - The Light of Sanctuary
Ten years later, the Grand Foyer of the Vance estate looked completely different from the cold, intimidating room it had once been.
The harsh black-and-white checkered marble was now softened by warm Persian rugs. Family portraits hung along the sweeping dark wood staircase, replacing the stiff, somber ancestral oil paintings. Laughter, music, and the smell of fresh apple pie drifted from the kitchen.
Theo, now eleven years old, tall, handsome, and with his father’s bright hazel eyes, bounded down the stairs with a soccer ball tucked under his arm. Behind him trailed seven-year-old Eleanor, giggling as she chased him with a drawing she had just finished.
""Dad! Mom! Look!"" Theo called out, skidding to a halt on the rug.
Julian, his dark hair now touched with silver at the temples, walked into the foyer from his study, wrapping his arm around Clara’s waist as she emerged from the garden with a basket of fresh flowers.
Theo held up a framed school certificate. ""I won the district humanitarian award for our school's charity drive! They asked me where I learned how to stand up for the younger kids.""
Julian smiled, his pride radiating like the sun. ""And what did you tell them, son?""
Theo looked at Clara, his eyes soft with profound, instinctive love.
""I told them I learned it from my mother,"" Theo said softly. ""I told them that true strength isn't about being big or loud. It's about being the person who shields someone else when everyone else looks away.""
Clara dropped her basket, pulling Theo into a tight, warm embrace as tears of pure happiness touched her eyes. Eleanor joined the hug, wrapping her arms around them both.
