Chapter 3 - An Unraveling Web

By sunrise, the city’s financial district was already buzzing with rumors of an impending billionaire wedding. But inside Julian’s executive penthouse office at Vance Tower, a very different transaction was unfolding.

Across from Julian sat Raymond Cross, the Vance family’s chief legal counsel for three decades. On the mahogany desk lay a thick manila folder, accompanied by Dr. Morrison’s medical report and a flash drive containing the mansion’s deleted security archives.

""Victoria thought her brother’s tech firm was the only one with backdoor access to our private servers,"" Raymond stated, tapping the drive. ""Our security director, Marcus, bypassed their remote kill-switch at 2:00 AM. We recovered two months of continuous footage from the nursery and hallways.""

Julian opened the folder. The stills alone made his stomach turn into cold lead.

For eight weeks, Victoria had methodically isolated the nursery staff. She had fired experienced nannies, dismissed loyal cooks, and planted her own subordinates in the house. Whenever Julian traveled to Singapore or London to finalize the corporate merger, Victoria’s sweet, maternal front melted into cold, calculated hostility toward Theo.

""Why?"" Julian rasped, his knuckles white against the desk. ""Theo is just a baby. He posed no threat to her.""

""He posed the ultimate threat, Julian,"" Raymond explained grimly. ""Under your late wife Eleanor’s trust, fifty-one percent of your ancestral holdings are tied directly to Theo’s legal guardianship upon your passing. If you married Victoria without an airtight prenuptial agreement, and if Theo were declared developmentally incapacitated or placed in a distant institutional ward... Victoria’s family would have seized administrative custody of the entire Vance empire.""

Julian closed his eyes. The realization hit him like a physical blow. He had been so blind, so obsessed with building an unassailable financial empire to safeguard his boy, that he had invited a predator into the child’s very cradle.

""Raymond,"" Julian said, opening his eyes, clear and lethal. ""Do not settle. Do not negotiate. File criminal charges for felony child abuse, battery, and attempted extortion. Then release the preliminary corporate divestment notice. By noon, I want the Sterling name erased from every board we touch.""
