Chapter 2 - The Silent Haven

Within an hour, the Vance estate had transformed from an ornate tomb into a fortress of quiet urgency.
Julian’s private physician, Dr. Robert Morrison, arrived through the private gate, his bag in hand. In the east wing’s sunlit parlor—far away from the cold marble foyer—Theo was thoroughly examined. Aside from mild dehydration and distress, the baby was physically unharmed, spared entirely by Clara’s sacrifice.
Clara, however, sat quietly on a velvet chaise, holding an ice pack against her swollen cheek. When Dr. Morrison gently cleansed the wound on her eyebrow, she merely flinched, biting her lip to prevent a single cry from escaping.
""No fractures, Julian,"" Dr. Morrison reported in hushed tones, adjusting his spectacles. ""The child was shielded. But Miss Bennett has sustained blunt force trauma, contusions across her ribs, and a mild concussion. She took the brunt of heavy blows.""
Julian stood by the window, his back rigid. In the reflection of the glass, his jaw was clenched so hard the muscles pulsed. ""Write down every single mark, Robert. Take high-resolution photographs. Every scrape, every bruise. I want a forensic-grade medical record.""
""Of course.""
When the doctor stepped out to confer with the nursing staff, silence settled over the room. Julian walked over and pulled up an armchair opposite Clara.
Clara looked down immediately, smoothing her skirts with bruised, work-worn hands. ""Mr. Vance... I'm so sorry. I broke protocol by speaking out. I should have waited until your private meeting ended, but—""
""Clara,"" Julian interrupted softly.
She paused, startled by the warmth in his voice. In the year she had worked in the nursery, Julian Vance had always been an enigma—a driven, solitary widower who buried his grief under endless acquisitions and late-night conference calls.
""Look at me,"" he requested gently.

She lifted her hazel eyes.
""You took blows meant for my son,"" Julian said, his eyes gleaming with profound respect and sorrow. ""You bled to keep an innocent life safe under my roof. You will never apologize to me again. Starting today, you are not staff. You are Theo’s guardian angel, and this house owes you a debt it can never fully repay.""
