Chapter 13 - An Authentic Union

Their wedding was deliberately unlike anything high society had ever staged.
There were no media cameras, no celebrity guests, and no corporate sponsor banners. They were married in the sun-dappled courtyard of the first completed sanctuary cottage of the Vance Foundation in upstate New York, surrounded by fifty children and families whose lives had already been saved by the initiative.
Clara walked down an aisle strewn with wildflowers, holding Theo—now two years old and grinning joyfully—by the hand. When she reached the altar, Julian didn't wait for protocol; he took his son into one arm and Clara into the other, holding them close against his chest before reciting his vows.
Their vows were simple, centered entirely on service, protection, and unconditional love.
When the local pastor pronounced them husband and wife, the applause was not polite, restrained golf-claps from bored socialites; it was the jubilant, roaring cheers of grateful children, working mothers, and true friends.
At the reception on the lawn, Julian danced with Clara under strings of paper lanterns. For the first time in memory, the burden of corporate expectations was completely lifted from his shoulders.
