Chapter 1 - The Cast Out

The polished mahogany doors of the grand foyer slammed shut with a finality that vibrated through Clara’s swollen belly. Rain whipped against the towering wrought-iron gates of the Blackwood Estate, relentless and biting in the autumn dusk. Clara pressed a trembling hand against her soaked lace gown, feeling the sharp, rhythmic flutter of her unborn child kicking in distress. Julian’s cold parting words still echoed in her ears like shattered glass: ""Take your things, and go."" Beside him, Elena’s vindictive smirk had felt like a blade twisting into her ribs. Julian had believed she was nothing more than an orphaned, penniless scholarship girl whom he had graciously elevated to high society. He thought her isolated, defenseless, and entirely at his mercy.

Clara leaned heavily against a marble column on the covered porch, her breath hitching in ragged gasps. The rain soaked through her delicate slippers, chilling her to the bone. At her feet sat three damp suitcases—the meager remnants of a three-year marriage Julian had casually tossed onto the driveway before having the guards revoke her gate access. He had already revoked her credit cards that morning, thinking he had completely cut off her life support. He had forgotten, or perhaps never truly understood, who she had been before she chose a quiet, humble life by his side.

Gasping through a sudden, sharp contraction, Clara pulled a sleek, encrypted smartphone from her clutch. Water droplets blurred the screen, but her fingers moved with instinctive precision, dialing a private number she had not touched in five years. She held the phone to her ear, closing her eyes as the dial tone rang once.

""Speak,"" a deep, commanding voice answered. The sheer authority radiating through the speaker made Clara’s tears spill over her eyelashes.

""Father,"" she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer exhaustion and betrayal. ""He had me thrown out. I am outside the gates, in the storm... carrying his heir.""

A suffocating silence fell over the other end of the line, heavy with an approaching tempest. When Marcus Vance spoke again, his voice was neither panicked nor hurried, but colder than Arctic ice. ""Stand where you are, Clara. The empire is coming to pick you up.""

Before the call disconnected, Clara looked up through the curtain of falling water. Down the winding private driveway, bright halogen headlights sliced through the darkness, followed by the deep, thunderous roar of an entire motorcade descending upon the estate.
