Chapter 4 - The Vance Sanctuary

The Vance medical convoy glided through the iron wrought gates of the Vance ancestral estate on the northern cliffs, miles away from the chaos of Sterling Manor. The mansion was a sanctuary of timeless limestone, grand fireplaces, and sprawling gardens overlooking the Atlantic. A full medical team waited in the private west wing, led by Dr. Evelyn Reed, the Vance family’s personal physician for over three decades.

Clara sat on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm wool blanket while nurses monitored the baby's steady heartbeat on a portable ultrasound monitor. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump filled the warm room, soothing the tight knot that had formed in Clara's chest.

""The baby is strong, Clara,"" Dr. Reed said gently, adjusting the sensor. ""However, the stress induced mild preterm contractions. You need absolute bed rest for the next forty-eight hours. No emotional shocks, no legal meetings.""

Marcus entered the room, having shed his wet overcoat. He carried a porcelain mug of chamomile tea, handing it to Clara with hands that had toppled market competitors without hesitation, yet trembled slightly as he held his only daughter.

""You should have called me the day he strayed,"" Marcus said softly, sitting on the armchair across from her. ""Why did you endure three years of his mediocrity?""

Clara looked down into the swirling amber tea. ""I wanted to believe he loved me for who I was, not for the Vance name. When I left the family business to marry him, I thought we were building something genuine. I didn't want your shadow to dictate our marriage."" She smiled bitterly. ""Turns out, without your shadow, he saw me as nothing more than an inconvenient burden to discard the moment a shiny new mistress caught his eye.""

""He will learn the true weight of that name,"" Marcus said quietly. There was no anger in his voice—only the terrifying calm of absolute power. ""Tomorrow morning, the financial markets open at eight-thirty. By nine o'clock, the name Sterling will be synonymous with financial ruin. But that is my battle, Clara. What do you want?""

Clara placed the mug on the glass table and looked up at her father. Her eyes, once soft and pleading, now burned with the fierce, unwavering resolve of a mother whose child had been threatened.

""I don't want Julian merely bankrupt, Father,"" Clara said, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. ""I want him to watch me take everything he ever pretended to own. I want the Sterling brand completely erased.""

Before Marcus could answer, Raymond knocked and entered, his expression unusually tense. ""Pardon the intrusion, sir. We have a developing situation. Elena’s family—the Vance-rivaling Morretti syndicate—has just posted bail for Julian’s debts, and they are preparing an emergency press conference.""
