Chapter 5 - The Snake's Countermove

The rain gave way to a foggy, overcast morning, but the atmosphere inside the downtown luxury hotel suite was thick with venom. Julian paced the hardwood floor, a half-empty glass of bourbon in his hand, his eyes bloodshot and erratic. Beside him sat Victor Morretti, an aging real-estate shark whose predatory tactics had clashed with Vance Global for decades. Elena sat on the armrest of her father’s leather chair, filing her nails with smug satisfaction.
""I don't care who her father is!"" Julian barked, slamming his glass onto the bar. ""She played me! For three years, she acted like a stray dog I rescued from the library! If Marcus Vance owns my estate, then Clara committed fraud by concealing her assets during our marriage! She misled me into an invalid prenuptial agreement!""
Victor Morretti chuckled, a gravelly sound that made the hair on Julian’s arms stand up. ""Calm down, boy. You panicked because an old man shook his checkbook at you. In the world of high finance, Marcus Vance is a giant, yes. But giants have massive blind spots. You gave her an heir. Under our state’s family statutes, an unborn child of a legal marriage grants significant custodial claims to both marital estates.""
Elena leaned in, her eyes gleaming with malice. ""We don't need to win the corporate war, Julian. We just need to take the baby. Once you have custody of the Vance heir, Marcus Vance will sign over half his shipping empire just to see his grandchild on weekends.""
Julian froze, the cold reality of the proposal washing over him. ""Custody? Clara would rather die than give up the child.""
""Then she can suffer,"" Victor said coldly. ""We've scheduled a live press conference for ten o'clock. We frame Clara as an unstable, manipulative heiress who abandoned her husband and fabricated domestic abuse to extort the Sterling legacy while pregnant. We file an emergency custody injunction based on maternal instability before she even delivers.""
Julian’s hesitation evaporated, replaced by an ugly, desperate greed. ""Can we really win that?""
""The media loves a fallen princess story,"" Victor smiled, pulling a signed document from his pocket. ""Our friendly judges are already reviewing the custody petition. By noon, the Vance estate will be swarming with child protective warrants.""
Meanwhile, seventy floors above the city in the Vance Tower boardroom, Clara sat at the head of the conference table, dressed in a sharp ivory pantsuit. Her hair was pulled back into an austere chignon. She watched the television monitor as the news ticker updated: BREAKING: Sterling Capital files emergency custody petition against Clara Vance.

Raymond looked at Clara, his pen poised. ""Shall we release the private investigator's dossier on Elena and Julian, ma'am?""
Clara looked at the screen, her gaze entirely cold. ""No. Let them dig their grave on national television first. Bring me the offshore audit.""
