Chapter 10 - Shadows Over the Cradle

The tragic murder of Julian Sterling sent shockwaves through the financial world, but behind the fortified gates of the Vance cliffs, there was no room for grief—only fortified preparation. Two weeks had passed since Alexander’s birth. Clara sat in the grand library of the estate, her newborn sleeping peacefully in a mahogany cradle beside her desk. She was dressed in an elegant black cashmere sweater, a stack of international shipping manifests spread before her.
Julian’s death was not a tragedy to mourn; it was a brutal demonstration of the Morretti syndicate's desperation. Victor Morretti had recognized that Julian was a useless liability who would gladly testify against him to shorten his prison sentence. By silencing Julian, Morretti had severed his direct legal connection to the embezzlement scheme, leaving Clara and her newborn son as the ultimate targets of his vendetta.
Marcus entered the library, accompanied by a tall, broad-shouldered man in his mid-thirties. The man wore a dark charcoal suit, his dark eyes sharp and assessing, carrying himself with the disciplined grace of an elite military operative. A faint scar ran along his left jawline, accentuating an aristocratic yet lethal demeanor.
""Clara,"" Marcus said, motioning the man forward. ""This is Liam Bennett. Former naval intelligence, currently the head of Bennett Global Security. From this day forward, Liam is responsible for your personal safety and Alexander’s protection.""
Clara looked up, her gaze analyzing Liam with cautious scrutiny. ""I already have two dozen Vance security guards patrolling the perimeter, Father.""
""Guards stop trespassers, Mrs. Vance,"" Liam Bennett spoke, his voice deep, gravelly, and steady. ""I eliminate calculated assassinations. Victor Morretti has hired the Cerberus network—private military contractors operating out of Eastern Europe. They don't jump fences; they compromise logistics, infiltrate utilities, and weaponize legal assets. If you want your son to survive his infancy, you need more than bodyguards. You need a shield.""
Clara stood up, walking toward the cradle and looking down at Alexander’s peaceful face. ""Victor Morretti believes that by threatening my son, he can force me to return his frozen European assets."" She looked directly into Liam's eyes, her gaze burning with unyielding steel. ""I will not pay a single cent of extortion. I want Morretti’s entire network dismantled, root and stem.""
Liam tilted his head slightly, an appreciative glint in his eye. ""Then we begin by hunting his remaining supply lines. Morretti is running his operations through a shadow subsidiary in Monaco. If we seize that port, he will have nowhere left to hide.""
Suddenly, the library lights flickered twice.

Outside, a piercing security alarm wailed across the coastal cliff, followed instantly by the muffled crump of an explosive detonating at the south guardhouse.
Liam moved before the sound even faded. His weapon was in his hand within a fraction of a second, his body instantly shielding Clara and the cradle. ""They aren't waiting for Monaco. They're already on the grounds.""
