Chapter 9 - The Birth of an Heir

The maternity wing of the Vance Private Hospital was sealed under maximum private security. Armed guards stood stationed at every elevator bank and emergency exit, while medical staff moved through the corridors with hushed urgency. Inside the delivery room, Clara gripped the side rails of the bed, her face bathed in sweat as another violent contraction tore through her abdomen.
""Breathe, Clara, steady your rhythm,"" Dr. Reed commanded gently, monitoring the vital signs displaying across three glowing screens. ""The baby is coming fast. You need to push on the next count.""
Beside the bed stood Marcus Vance. The man who had faced down hostile takeovers and ruthless cartels without flinching was pale, his large hands tightly holding Clara’s fingers. ""I'm here, Clara. You are safe. Nothing in this world can harm you now.""
Clara screamed through the agony, her vision blurring as memories of Julian's cruel laughter flashed in her mind: Take your things, and go. Then Elena's mocking voice: He already chose me. With a final, ferocious surge of willpower, Clara pushed, pouring every ounce of pain, humiliation, and resurrected strength into bringing her child into the world.
A sharp, piercing cry shattered the tension in the room.
Dr. Reed carefully lifted the infant, wrapping him in a warm sterile blanket before laying him gently on Clara’s chest. ""It's a boy, Clara. A healthy, beautiful boy.""
Clara looked down at the tiny, red-faced infant resting against her skin. He had a dusting of dark hair, but his eyes, blinking open against the hospital lights, were the striking, luminous hazel of the Vance lineage. The boy let out a soft whimper, his tiny fingers curling instinctively around Clara’s thumb. A profound, sacred warmth flooded her chest, washing away the lingering toxicity of the past three years.
""Alexander,"" Clara whispered, her voice trembling with unconditional love. ""Your name is Alexander Vance.""
Marcus leaned down, his eyes glistening with rare tears as he touched his grandson’s tiny cheek. ""He will inherit the world, Clara. I swear it to you.""
The quiet sanctuary was interrupted by a quiet knock at the door. Raymond stepped in, his expression solemn despite the joyous occasion. He waited by the entrance until Marcus motioned him forward.
""Is the paperwork signed?"" Clara asked, never taking her eyes off her son.
""Julian signed everything,"" Raymond said softly. ""The Sterling name is officially extinguished. However, ma'am... Victor Morretti has fled the country. Before he disappeared, his operatives broke into Julian's holding facility.""

Clara’s gaze hardened instantly, snapping up to Raymond. ""Did Julian escape?""
""No,"" Raymond replied grimly. ""Julian was found stabbed to death in his cell twenty minutes ago. A message was carved into the cell wall: The debt is transferred to the child.""
