Chapter 11 - The Siege of Cliffside

""Lockdown protocol Beta-Six!"" Liam shouted into his encrypted collar-mic, grabbing the heavy mahogany desk and flipping it with one arm to create a barricade in front of the infant's cradle. ""Marcus, take the safe room lift! Mrs. Vance, stay behind me!""
""I am not hiding while my men fight,"" Clara said, her voice completely calm despite the deafening alarms rattling the high stained-glass windows. She reached beneath the library desk, unlocking a biometric compartment and pulling out a compact ceramic firearm with seamless familiarity. Marcus had trained her to shoot before she learned to drive; she was no helpless damsel.
The heavy glass panes of the library balcony shattered inward in a shower of deadly shards. Two men clad in black tactical gear and night-vision visors swung inside on tactical ropes, automatic rifles raised.
Crack! Crack!
Liam fired twice with terrifying precision. The lead intruder collapsed instantly, his rifle skittering across the parquet floor. The second attacker dove behind a stone fireplace, spraying suppressive automatic fire across the bookshelves, pulverizing rare first editions into confetti. Wood splinters flew like shrapnel.
Liam lunged forward, closing the distance in a low, lightning sprint. He seized the barrel of the attacker's rifle, twisting it away with bone-shattering force before landing a brutal elbow strike to the man's throat. The mercenary crumpled, breathless and incapacitated.
""More incoming from the terrace!"" Marcus warned, firing his own service revolver through the open doors as gunfire echoed across the exterior gardens. The Vance security force was engaging the mercenary team in a fierce, sustained firefight on the lawn below.
Clara scooped Alexander from the cradle, pressing the sleeping infant against her chest with her left arm while keeping her firearm raised with her right. The baby, startled by the percussive noise, began to cry.
""We need to move to the underground bunker now!"" Liam said, reloading his magazine with mechanical speed. ""They cut the estate's main power grid and jammed external cellular signals. This isn't a kidnapping raid—it's an extermination contract.""
They moved swiftly through the secret panel behind the library's tapestry, descending down a spiral stone staircase into the reinforced subterranean corridors built beneath the cliffs. The thick concrete walls dampened the gunfire above, replacing it with the eerie, resonant hum of backup diesel generators.
As they reached the heavy steel blast doors of the command bunker, Liam’s tactical radio crackled through the static.

""Commander Bennett, perimeter breached at the sea cave!"" a panicked security officer reported over the radio. ""They didn't come by land—they scaled the cliffs from speedboats! There’s someone waiting inside the lower tunnel!""
Liam raised his weapon, gesturing for Marcus and Clara to freeze. At the end of the dimly lit concrete hallway, standing directly between them and the safe room, was Elena Morretti. She was dressed in leather, a cruel smirk playing on her lips, holding a remote detonator wired to the emergency ventilation shafts.
