Chapter 8 - The Desperate Deal

Within twenty-four hours of the press conference, the Sterling legacy was obliterated. Julian sat in a bleak interrogation room at the metropolitan detention center, wearing an orange jumpsuit that felt abrasive against his skin. His expensive cologne had long faded, replaced by the sour scent of sweat and despair. Across the metal table sat Elena, her hair unkempt, her designer makeup smeared from hours of crying.

""My father is cutting me off, Julian!"" Elena shrieked, slamming her palms on the cold table. ""He says the Vance lawyers tied all his European shipping assets to your fraudulent guarantees! I have no access to my trust fund, my townhouse has been seized by the marshals, and they are threatening to indict me as an accessory!""

Julian buried his face in his cuffed hands, the chains clinking against the steel tabletop. ""I had no idea Clara was keeping forensic track of those offshore transfers. I thought she was just an introverted bookworm who liked painting! She never mentioned Vance Global... not once!""

""Because she was testing you, you idiot!"" Elena screamed, tears tracking through her foundation. ""And you failed every single day! You threw away the Vance empire for me, and now both of us are going to prison!""

The heavy steel door swung open, and Raymond Cross walked into the room, flanked by two armed guards. He carried an expensive leather briefcase, which he placed on the table with quiet deliberation. He pulled out a single fountain pen and a slim set of legal documents.

Julian looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope igniting in his eyes. ""Raymond! Clara sent you? She wants to make a deal, right? Tell her I'll surrender all custody rights! I'll never see the child! Just drop the federal charges!""

Raymond smiled thinly, sitting down opposite the ruined couple. ""Mrs. Clara Vance has no interest in negotiating custody, Mr. Sterling. The family court terminated your parental standing this morning due to documented criminal negligence and malicious financial fraud against your unborn child’s trust.""

Julian choked on his breath. ""Then... then why are you here?""

""I am here on behalf of Vance Global Acquisitions,"" Raymond said, sliding the documents across the table. ""This is a total surrender of the Sterling family trademarks, the historic patents, and your family's seaside estate in Newport. In exchange, Mrs. Vance will decline to pursue private restitution charges, reducing your pending federal sentence from thirty years to perhaps twelve.""

Julian stared at the papers. ""You're stripping me of everything my family built over three generations.""

May you like

""You stripped yourself the night you threw a heavily pregnant woman into an autumn storm,"" Raymond replied, his tone devoid of warmth. ""Sign, Julian. Or spend your youth in a maximum-security penitentiary.""

Julian picked up the pen, his hand trembling violently. Just as the tip touched the paper, the room’s intercom buzzed sharply. The guard pressed the receiver, listened for five seconds, and turned to Raymond with wide eyes. ""Sir, it's Dr. Reed from the private clinic. Mrs. Vance has gone into early labor.""
