Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The cold marble pressed hard against Clara’s cheek, soothing the raw heat burning across her skin. Above her, Victoria stood poised at the crest of the landing like an empress overseeing an execution, diamonds glittering against the burgundy silk of her gown. Victoria’s chest heaved with theatrical panic, her manicured fingers flying to her mouth in faux horror as footfalls echoed through the vaulted foyer.
""She jumped!"" Victoria shrieked, her voice bouncing off the vaulted ceilings. ""Eleanor, I swear! She lunged toward me, screaming about the inheritance, and threw herself over the edge!""
Lady Eleanor Vance swept into view, her silver hair immaculate, navy silk rustling with cold authority. Behind her loomed two private security guards. Clara did not move. Her hand remained tucked discreetly beneath the fold of her beige knit cardigan, fingertips resting on the edge of the sleek black device hidden on the carpeted riser.
""Detective Ross… you heard?"" Clara’s voice was barely a rasp, directed downward toward the tiny pinprick microphone.
The speaker cracked faintly against the polished stone, audible only to her ear. “Every word. Keep her talking.”
Eleanor paused at the foot of the stairs, gaze raking down Clara’s sprawled frame with a mixture of disgust and suspicion. The Vance empire did not tolerate scandals, nor did it tolerate uninvited heirs. Clara’s pregnancy was an unbearable complication to the dynasty’s succession plans.
""Call the family physician,"" Eleanor instructed coldly, ignoring Clara’s obvious pain. ""No police. No outside paramedics. We handle this internally.""
Victoria glided down the steps, a viper draped in silk, crouching inches away from Clara. Under Eleanor's blind spot, Victoria’s lips peeled back into a triumphant, mocking sneer. ""It’s over, Clara,"" she murmured, barely loud enough for Clara to hear. ""Your bastard child won't touch a cent. And now, Julian will never look at you again.""

Clara kept her eyes glassy and frail, letting a single tear trace down her pale cheek. She did not fight back, nor did she raise her voice. She simply adjusted her cardigan just enough to reveal the blinking red recording icon on the phone’s glowing screen.
Victoria's triumphant smirk instantly froze into abject terror.
