BLOODLINE OF GLASS AND VENOM / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Vault of Ghosts

The fifty-second floor was deathly still. The executive suite looked like a modern fortress, devoid of warmth, dominated by dark slate, brushed steel, and bulletproof glass.

Julian led Clara toward the central server room—a climate-controlled chamber sealed behind four inches of reinforced titanium. Through the glass, banks of high-frequency trading servers blinked rapidly, executing hundreds of thousands of transactions per second.

""Look,"" Clara pointed at the central terminal. On the main monitor, a red progress bar was climbing steadily: Capital Transfer to Banque Privée Helvétique – 74% Complete.

""She’s draining the treasury,"" Julian said, his fingers flying across the auxiliary keyboard. ""If that transfer hits one hundred percent, thirty thousand Vance employees will lose their pensions by noon, and the corporation will collapse into insolvency.""

""Stop the protocol,"" Clara urged, watching the percentage climb: 78%... 79%.

""The master kill switch requires root access,"" Julian said, sweat beading on his forehead as he fought the system's defensive firewalls. ""Eleanor rerouted the encryption keys to her personal tablet. I can’t override it from here!""

A slow, deliberate clapping echoed through the hallway outside.

Clara and Julian turned simultaneously. Eleanor Vance stood at the threshold of the server room, flanked by Croft and three heavily armed security contractors. In Eleanor's left hand was the tablet displaying the live transfer; in her right was a small, ornate snub-nosed revolver.

""I expected better from you, Julian,"" Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venomous disappointment. ""To bring a stray dog into our temple? After everything I did to protect your name?""

Julian stepped in front of Clara, shielding her with his body. ""You didn't protect my name, Eleanor. You hid your shame. You murdered my father!""

Eleanor’s cold exterior shattered, her eyes blazing with sudden, terrifying madness. ""Arthur would have stripped me of everything! He would have thrown Marcus and me into the gutter! I made Marcus what he was, and when he tried to give it all to this little nobody,"" she hissed, glaring at Clara, ""he became a traitor to his own blood!""

The screen behind them chimed softly: 88% Complete.
