Chapter 8 - The Velvet Prison
Eleanor Vance stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of her penthouse study, watching the early dawn mist roll over the city skyline. A cup of black tea sat untouched on the mahogany desk behind her.
The heavy double doors opened, and her head of private security, Donald Croft, entered with a grim expression.
""Speak,"" Eleanor commanded without turning around.
""Dr. Sterling was arrested at Saint Jude’s,"" Croft said flatly. ""The hit failed. Julian intervened.""
Eleanor’s grip tightened around the gold pen she was holding until her knuckles turned white. ""Julian? What was he doing there?""
""He followed the ambulance from the estate. Furthermore, ma'am... Detective Ross secured Sterling’s personal drive. The Marcus protocols have been compromised.""
For the first time in thirty years, Eleanor Vance felt the cold breath of ruin on her neck. She turned slowly, her face rigid with rage. ""Where is Victoria?""
""Her bail hearing is set for ten o'clock. The district attorney says the audio recording is catastrophic. Victoria was caught admitting premeditation. They can't suppress it without exposing our leverage on the bench.""
""Cut her loose,"" Eleanor said coldly, dismissing her future daughter-in-law without a second thought. ""Victoria is a liability. Let her high-priced lawyers drown in their own incompetence. Our only concern is that child Clara is carrying.""
""Julian is still at the hospital,"" Croft added. ""He knows, ma'am. About Marcus.""

Eleanor closed her eyes for three long seconds. When she opened them, the last shred of maternal warmth had vanished, replaced by the lethal ruthlessness that had preserved the Vance dynasty for half a century.
""Prepare the Gulfstream,"" Eleanor ordered. ""And tell the offshore team to initiate Protocol Zero. If Julian refuses to stand with this family, he will fall with it.""
