BLOODLINE OF GLASS AND VENOM / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - A New Horizon

Six months later.

The salt breeze of the Atlantic rolled over the cliffs of Cape Cod, carrying the scent of pine and ocean spray. In the distance, the white sails of fishing boats cut cleanly across the sapphire waters.

Clara stood on the porch of the coastal cottage Marcus had bought years ago, cradling a three-week-old baby boy swaddled in pale blue wool. The child slept soundly, his chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm, safe from the greed and venom that had consumed the family before him.

Gravel crunched on the private driveway. A modest sedan pulled up, and Julian stepped out, dressed casually in jeans and a dark jacket. He carried a small wooden box under his arm.

He walked up the wooden steps, offering Clara a warm, genuine smile that had completely replaced the arrogant smirk of his past life.

""How is Marcus doing today?"" Julian asked softly, peering down at the sleeping infant.

""He has his father's stubbornness,"" Clara said with a soft laugh, stepping aside to let him sit on the porch bench. ""He refused to sleep until an hour ago.""

Julian sat down, setting the wooden box on his lap. He opened the brass latch, revealing Marcus Vance’s antique pocket watch, fully restored and ticking with steady, mechanical precision.

""The federal receivership concluded yesterday,"" Julian said, looking out toward the ocean. ""The foundation is officially independent. I stepped down from the executive board this morning.""

Clara looked at him, surprised. ""You didn't have to do that, Julian. The workers wanted you to stay.""

""I needed to build something that belongs to me,"" Julian replied quietly, turning to meet her eyes. ""Not built on Marcus's ghost, and not on Eleanor's lies. I’m opening a small naval design firm in Boston. Starting from zero.""

Clara watched him for a long moment, seeing the true strength that adversity had finally forged in him. ""Marcus would have been proud of you, Julian.""

Julian smiled, reaching out to gently touch the baby's tiny hand. The infant’s fingers curled instinctively around Julian's thumb, gripping it tight.

A low rumble of an approaching car broke the coastal silence. Clara glanced up toward the driveway. A black sedan with government plates had parked at the gate, its headlights flashing twice.

Detective Ross stepped out of the vehicle, his trench coat flapping in the sea breeze, holding an unsealed manila envelope with an urgent red seal.

Clara and Julian exchanged a single, sharp look. The past was never truly buried."
