Chapter 2 - The Echo of Sirens

The silence in the grand foyer was broken only by the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock. Victoria stared at the tiny screen, blood draining from her sculpted face until she was as pale as the marble underneath them.
""You... you recorded me?"" Victoria whispered, panic lacing her razor-sharp tone.
Clara smiled faintly, a slow, predatory curving of her lips that transformed her from broken victim to calculating architect. ""The line has been open since I walked into this mansion, Victoria.""
Before Victoria could reach down to snatch the phone, heavy boots hammered outside the oak double doors. Blue and red strobes suddenly painted the frosted glass of the entrance, shattering the dim elegance of Vance Manor with abrasive, pulsating light.
Eleanor turned sharply, her aristocratic poise slipping. ""Who called emergency services? I explicitly ordered—""
The massive doors burst open. Detective Ross entered, flanked by four uniformed officers and two emergency paramedics pushing a gurney. Ross was an imposing figure in a worn trench coat, his eyes locked straight onto the staircase landing.
""Detective Ross, Vance Manor is private property,"" Eleanor declared, stepping forward to block his path with imperious indignation. ""This is an unfortunate domestic accident. We require no municipal interference.""
""Step aside, Mrs. Vance,"" Ross said calmly, holding up a search and welfare warrant. ""We received a direct emergency transmission of an alleged physical assault and attempted murder involving Clara Miller and Victoria Vance.""
Victoria backed away up the stairs, shaking her head frantically. ""No! She's lying! She set me up! Julian, tell them!""

At the far end of the upper corridor, the study door swung wide. Julian Vance stepped into the light, his tie loosened, clutching an amber glass of bourbon. His gaze dropped from his frantic fiancée Victoria, past the armed police officers, and landed straight on Clara lying broken on the floor, cradling her pregnant belly.
Clara looked up into Julian's eyes, and for the first time, she mouthed the four words that would shatter his world completely.
