BLOODLINE OF GLASS AND VENOM / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Ledger of Truth

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had cleared over the city, leaving behind a crisp, crystalline autumn afternoon.

Clara sat in the opulent boardroom of Vance Tower, but the atmosphere was completely changed. The room was filled with forensic accountants, federal trustees, and representatives of the shipyard workers' union. On the table lay the recovered ledger, alongside Marcus Vance’s verified final testament.

Julian entered, wearing a simple dark sweater, carrying a single leather briefcase. The cut on his shoulder was healing, but the weary lines around his eyes ran deep.

""The board just ratified the emergency resolutions,"" Clara said, looking up from the documents. ""Eleanor and Victoria have been denied bail. Dr. Sterling has turned state's witness in exchange for avoiding federal death penalty charges.""

Julian set his briefcase on the table and sat down across from her. ""And the shipyards?""

""The escrow funds were released this morning,"" Clara answered, sliding a document toward him. ""The pension deficit is fully funded. The bankruptcy filing was withdrawn. The company survives.""

Julian looked at the document. It was a formal restructuring charter. At the top, in clean print, was the new entity name: Marcus Vance Memorial Foundation.

""What happens to the voting shares?"" Julian asked, his voice steady.

""They belong to Marcus's heir,"" Clara said, her hand resting over her belly. ""Held in trust until the child comes of age."" She paused, studying Julian's weary face. ""Marcus left a codicil, Julian. A sealed clause that could only be opened after Eleanor's arrest.""

She slid a second, cream-colored envelope across the mahogany wood. Julian’s hands shook slightly as he broke the wax seal stamped with his father’s signet ring.

Inside was a single handwritten page in Marcus’s bold, sloping script:

May you like

Julian, my son. If you are reading this, the shadow has finally lifted. Do not carry my guilt, and do not let my father's poison define your bloodline. Take care of Clara. Take care of your sibling. The empire is yours to rebuild—not with lies, but with redemption.

Tears welled in Julian's eyes, dripping onto the paper. For the first time in his life, he knew who he was.
