Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Ward

The silence that followed the blackout was suffocating. The hum of medical machinery died instantly, replaced only by the dim red glow of the backup exit signs over the corridor doors.

Ross was on his feet in a split second, his service weapon drawn and resting along his thigh. ""Stay down, Clara.""

Clara pushed herself upright against the pillows, her hand instinctively cupping her swollen stomach. The steady rhythm of her baby's heartbeat on the monitor was gone, leaving only the sound of her own accelerated breathing.

Outside in the hall, muffled footsteps moved swiftly across the linoleum—not the heavy, hurried clatter of nurses responding to a power failure, but the deliberate, muffled strides of tactical boots.

""Ross,"" Clara whispered, her pulse hammering in her throat.

""I hear it,"" the detective replied, stepping toward the heavy wooden door. He cracked it an inch, peering into the crimson-lit hallway.

A sharp, metallic hiss cut through the darkness. Before Ross could raise his weapon, the door was kicked violently inward, slamming the detective against the concrete wall. A silhouette dressed in black medical scrubs burst into the room, holding a pneumatic syringe loaded with clear amber liquid.

Clara scrambled backward on the bed, wires ripping free from her skin with sharp stings. The intruder ignored Ross and lunged directly toward her IV port, his eyes emotionless beneath a surgical mask.

""Don't fight it, Ms. Miller,"" a familiar voice rasped. ""The Vance family sends its condolences.""

Clara recognized the voice instantly—Dr. Aaron Sterling, the Vance family’s personal physician who had signed off on Marcus Vance’s mysterious death certificate three years ago.

Before the needle could pierce the line, a sudden collision sent the intruder sprawling across the tiles. Julian Vance tackled the doctor to the ground, his knuckles split and bleeding.

""Get away from her!"" Julian roared, driving a brutal punch into the physician's jaw.

The doctor rolled, slashing outward with a scalpel hidden in his palm. A flash of silver cut through the shadows, and Julian let out a strangled gasp, collapsing sideways against the foot of the bed.
