Chapter 2 - The Bitter Drop

The aconite acted like crushed glass coated in fire. The moment Emma forced the tender bite down her throat, the delicate sweetness of the caramelized butter vanished, replaced by an acrid, metallic numbness that spread aggressively across the back of her tongue. Her vocal cords seized, tightening as if a cold wire were winding around her windpipe.

For a heartbeat, the room seemed suspended in amber.

Beatrice stood frozen, both hands clutching the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles white beneath a layer of polished bronzer. The sneer had vanished from her features, replaced by a momentary, hollow horror. She knew what was in the sauce. She knew what three drops of winter-distilled wolfsbane did to the human cardiovascular system within minutes.

""You psychotic little freak,"" Beatrice stammered, trying to regain her predatory cadence, but her voice cracked on the final syllable. ""Did you see that? Julian! She touched your food! She ate off your plate! Kill her, or have Marcus throw her out the window!""

Julian Thorne didn't flinch. He didn't lean away from Emma, who stood swaying beside his left shoulder, her pale hand clutching the corner of his high-backed leather chair to keep from collapsing. His dark eyes, colder than winter ice, tracked the tiny bead of cold sweat running down Emma’s temple to her jaw.

He didn't look angry. He looked fascinated.

""Leave the room,"" Julian said.

He hadn't raised his voice, but the low, melodic command cut through the tension like an executioner’s blade.

""Julian, darling, she ruined the dinner—"" Beatrice began, stepping toward him with practiced, pleading grace.

""Everyone,"" Julian clarified, his eyes never leaving Emma’s trembling lips. ""Out.""

The guests didn't hesitate. In the high-stakes underworld of Manhattan’s elite, where Julian Thorne controlled shipping ports, private security firms, and half the municipal judges in the state, disobedience carried physical consequences. Chairs scraped back against hardwood with panicked haste. Women snatched their clutch bags; men hurriedly ushered their companions toward the heavy double doors of the penthouse. Beatrice lingered for two agonizing seconds, her manicured fingers digging into her sequined purse, glaring at Emma with venomous promise, before Julian's head of security, Marcus, placed a massive hand on her shoulder and guided her out.

The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut. The penthouse fell into a tomb-like quiet, broken only by the low, wheezing cadence of Emma’s breathing.

Emma’s knees buckled. Her body betrayed her, gravity yanking her down toward the floor.

Before her knees struck the parquet, Julian moved.

His reflexes were inhumanly sharp. He caught her beneath her arms, his fingers gripping her ribs through the rough cotton of her maid uniform. Without breaking a sweat, he hoisted her up, spinning her around and shoving her down onto the very chair Beatrice had just vacated.

""Who told you to touch that?"" Julian murmured, leaning over her until his lips were inches from her ear. His breath smelled of bitter espresso and cedar smoke. ""Do you have a death wish, Emma?""

Emma gripped the edge of the table, her fingernails splintering against the lacquer. The numbness had reached her chest; her heart was fluttering like a trapped bird, skipping every third beat in erratic spasms. She fought for air, her lips tinged with an ash-grey hue.

""You... knew,"" she forced out between cracked lips. ""You knew it was poisoned.""

Julian stared down at her, his face an impenetrable mask of aristocratic cruelty. He reached out with one manicured finger and traced the side of her neck, feeling the frantic, jagged race of her carotid artery.

""Of course I knew,"" he said softly. ""The sous-chef works for my counter-intelligence team. Beatrice transferred the money forty-five minutes ago.""

Emma’s vision blurred. Tears of burning chemical irritation leaked from the corners of her eyes. ""Then... why let her... serve it?""

""Because I wanted to see who would stop her,"" Julian whispered, leaning closer, his thumb pressing firmly against the pulse point in her throat. His eyes flashed with a terrifying, predatory revelation. ""And more importantly, I wanted to confirm that a dead girl had finally crawled back from the Mediterranean to save my life.""

He pulled a small amber glass vial from his inner tuxedo pocket and held it before her fading vision.

May you like

""An atropine derivative,"" he murmured, his voice cruel and calm. ""It will stop the arrhythmia in thirty seconds. But you aren't leaving this penthouse until you tell me who pulled you out of the burning car three years ago, my lovely wife.""

Emma tried to reach for the vial, but her arm fell limp against her apron. Julian closed his fist around the antidote, watching her suffocate.
