Chapter 7 - A Dance with Scorpions

The high-velocity rounds punched through the aluminum floor of the ductwork with terrifying snaps, showering Emma’s face with jagged metal burrs and concrete debris.
One bullet grazed the meat of her upper arm. A searing line of fire bloomed across her bicep, hot blood instantly soaking through the black sleeve of her uniform. She choked down a scream, biting her tongue until the taste of iron filled her mouth.
She scrambled backward through the narrow pipe, throwing herself down a secondary chute that dumped into the maintenance corridor behind the commercial kitchens.
She hit the stainless-steel prep table below with a violent thud, rolling onto the floor tiles among scattered pots and discarded cutting boards. The penthouse kitchen was chaotic, filled with flashing amber strobe lights and the mechanical voice of the building's AI reciting emergency evacuation protocols.
Emma didn't stop to catch her breath. Clutching her bleeding arm, she grabbed a ten-inch carbon steel chef’s knife from a magnetic rack and sprinted toward the freight elevator bank.
She slammed her palm against the override panel. The steel doors parted with a low chime.
Inside stood Julian Thorne.
He was entirely unscathed. The halon override she had tripped had unlocked the emergency magnetic latches on the walk-in freezer, allowing Julian and Marcus to breach the perimeter before the carbon dioxide could paralyze them. In Julian’s right hand was a heavy, matte-black tactical sidearm. His shirt was unbuttoned to his ribs, damp with sweat, his eyes burning with an unholy, lethal focus.
Marcus stood behind him, wiping dark grease from his hands.
Julian stepped out of the elevator. His eyes dropped to Emma’s torn sleeve, taking in the glistening streak of crimson running down her arm.
His jaw locked. A terrifying stillness settled over his features—the silence before an artillery strike.
""Who touched you?"" he asked. The question was soft, but it carried the weight of an execution order.
""The assassin,"" Emma panted, leaning against the doorframe, fighting the black spots dancing in her eyes. ""He’s in your study with Beatrice. They have a transponder extraction kit. Julian... they’re preparing to blow Pier 42.""
Julian didn't answer with words. He reached out with his left hand, caught Emma by the nape of her neck, and pulled her flush against his chest. His fingers tangled in her messy hair, holding her steady while his thumb wiped a smear of soot from her cheek.
For a single, breathless second, Emma felt the frantic, heavy slam of his heart against her ribs. It wasn't the heartbeat of a detached sociopath. It was the rhythm of a man who had stared into hell and refused to yield an inch of ground.
""Marcus,"" Julian said, his voice flat as razor wire. ""Secure the perimeter around the ballroom. No one leaves the building. If Beatrice attempts to reach the helipad, shoot the rotors out of the sky.""
""Understood, boss,"" Marcus nodded, racking the slide of his shotgun and vanishing down the service stairwell.
Julian looked down into Emma’s wide hazel eyes. ""Can you stand?""
""I don't need your permission to stand,"" she spat back, her pride flaring through the agony in her arm.
A ghost of a smirk touched Julian’s lips. ""Good. Because the Ouroboros Syndicate didn't just send an assassin to Manhattan. Their leadership is already here. They are sitting in my ballroom right now, disguised as European diplomats, waiting for my corpse to be rolled out so they can collect Beatrice and your transponder.""
""What are you going to do?"" Emma asked, tightening her grip on the chef’s knife.
Julian racked the slide of his pistol with a crisp, metallic clack, tucking it neatly into the small of his back beneath his tailored jacket. He reached out and gently pried the knife from Emma’s white-knuckled grip, replacing it with a small, palm-sized electronic detonator.
""Three years ago, they burned my car,"" Julian said, his eyes reflecting the flashing red emergency beacons. ""Tonight, Valerie, we burn their world.""
He grabbed her uninjured hand, his grip unyielding and cold, and kicked open the double mahogany doors leading into the grand ballroom.
The room fell into stunned, horrified silence.
Hundreds of high-society guests in black-tie attire and couture gowns turned toward the entrance. Beatrice Vance was already on the raised marble stage near the grand piano, microphone in hand, her face frozen in mid-sentence. She had just been announcing Julian Thorne’s ""tragic, sudden medical incapacitation.""
Standing beside the stage, his hands folded neatly over a tailored three-piece suit, was an elderly man with a silver-tipped walking cane. The pin on his lapel was a serpent swallowing its own tail around a shattered hourglass.
The Grandmaster of the Ouroboros Syndicate.
Beatrice’s face turned the color of chalk. The microphone slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the marble floor with an ear-splitting, screeching feedback loop.
""Julian..."" she whispered into the dead silence.
Julian didn't look at the crowd. He kept his hand firmly locked around Emma’s fingers, walking her slowly down the red carpet toward the stage like an emperor presenting his empress.
May you like
""You look surprised, Beatrice,"" Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the vast expanse of the ballroom. ""Did you think the poison in my scallop would act faster than my retribution?""
From the corners of the ballroom, twelve men in tailored suits reached inside their jackets.
