Chapter 14 - The Broken Vow

Julian reached into the pocket of his overcoat and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, setting it on the table between them beside the master ledger.
Emma didn't open it. ""What is that?""
""The signet ring of the Rossi family,"" Julian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unwavering intensity. ""My father wore it. His father wore it. According to the council, whoever wears this ring alongside the Donati bloodline commands the entire eastern seaboard.""
""I told you in the cathedral,"" Emma said, her voice steady, though her pulse fluttered beneath the collar of her shirt. ""I am not a prize to be traded to fulfill an ancient covenant.""
""I know,"" Julian replied softly. He took another step closer, abandoning the cane, tolerating the agonizing pain in his shoulder just to stand on his own two feet before her. ""The covenant is dead, Emma. I burned the council's copies yesterday from my hospital bed.""
Emma looked up at him, surprised. ""You burned them?""
""The Commission has no power over us anymore,"" Julian murmured, reaching out and gently taking her right hand in his. His skin was warm, his calloused thumb tracing the pale scar across her palm where the silver dagger had scratched her in the crypt. ""The assets are in your name. The soldiers answer to Marco, and Marco answers to you. If you walk out of this penthouse right now, you leave with billions of dollars and total immunity. Nobody will ever touch you again.""
Emma stared at their joined hands. ""And what happens to you if I walk away?""
""I rebuild,"" Julian said, a cold, self-deprecating smirk touching his mouth. ""Or I die trying. It doesn't matter. You spent your whole life trapped in other people's cages, Emma. I'm not going to be another one.""
Emma looked from his hand up to the inked swallow climbing his neck, past his sharp jawline, directly into his dark, guarded eyes. She saw the brutal killer the world feared, but she also saw the man who had swallowed poison just to prove her point, the man who had thrown himself in front of a bullet to keep her breathing.
Slowly, deliberately, Emma reached out with her other hand, picked up the velvet box, and slipped the heavy gold signet ring onto her own index finger.
""You're not a cage, Julian,"" she whispered, stepping into his space, her hand resting against the uninjured side of his broad chest. ""You're the only weapon I trust.""
Julian’s breath hitched. His arm came around her waist, pulling her flush against him, his lips finding hers in a fierce, breathless kiss that tasted of salt, iron, and a dangerous, undeniable surrender.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, a quiet, urgent knock broke the silence at the double doors.

Marco stood in the entrance, his face completely pale, holding a sealed, diplomatic courier pouch stamped with a black wax crest.
""Boss... Emma,"" Marco said, his voice trembling slightly. ""We have a problem.""
