BOUND BY BLOOD AND SILENCE / Chapter 9 / 23

Chapter 1 - The Silver Fork

The crystal chandelier overhead hummed with a low electric vibration that felt less like light and more like pressure. Emma’s fingers ached around the warm rim of the porcelain plate. Her breath caught somewhere in the hollow of her throat, tight and dry, as Victoria’s command echoed off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Manhattan.

""I said put it down, Emma."" Victoria didn't shout this time; she let the venom settle into a deliberate, velvet purr that was infinitely worse. Her crimson dress spilled across the mahogany chair like fresh arterial blood. Across the long table, six elite patrons of the Rossi syndicate sat frozen, their wine glasses suspended in mid-air, terrified of breaking the brittle equilibrium of the room.

Emma did not lower her chin. To bow was to break, and she had spent three grueling years surviving in the lower corridors of Julian Rossi’s estate by becoming invisible, not obedient. She knelt slightly, setting the plate before him with deliberate, agonizing slowness. The seared scallop glistened under the chandelier light, swimming in an amber glaze seasoned with crushed dried mint and citrus peel—a preparation only one household in southern Italy had ever used. A dish made exclusively to mask the bitter almond scent of white aconite.

Julian did not flinch. His tailored double-breasted coat rested squarely against his broad shoulders, framing the inked curve of the swallow tattoo climbing up his left collarbone. His dark eyes flicked once toward the dish, then up toward Emma's trembling eyelashes. He picked up the silver fork, his knuckles pale and steady.

""You look frightened, little bird,"" Julian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through the silver in his hands.

""I am merely executing my duties, sir,"" Emma replied, her voice dangerously thin.

Julian turned the fork over, parting the fragile sprig of microgreens. Beneath the glaze, a faint gray residue clouded the caramel syrup. Victoria let out a sharp, breathless laugh from across the table, smoothing her diamond earrings with predatory delight.

""She tried to feed you your brother's legacy, Julian,"" Victoria whispered, leaning forward. ""Search her pockets. Look at what she carries beneath that spotless white apron.""

Julian’s gaze locked onto Emma’s chest, where the stiff cotton fabric rose and fell in ragged rhythm. He stood up slowly, towering over her, his shadow swallowing the plate entirely. He reached into his inner pocket, not for a weapon, but pulling out a crumpled silver chain dangling an identical pendant to the one pressed cold against Emma’s ribcage.

""Where did you get this recipe, Emma?"" Julian asked, his voice dead of all warmth. ""Because the only woman who ever cooked it died seven years ago in my arms.""
