Chapter 4 - Blood on the Marble

The heavy scent of copper hung thick in the air of the commercial walk-in freezer on the lower concourse. Frost clung to the stainless-steel shelves, dusting trays of dry-aged beef and vacuum-sealed herbs with a thin layer of white ice. Hanging from a butcher's hook by his chef’s coat was Chef Gerard.

His eyes were wide, glassy, and frozen, reflecting the stark industrial LEDs overhead. Across the frosted stainless steel wall behind his swaying body, five letters had been scrawled in dark, coagulating crimson: VALERIE.

Julian stood in front of the corpse, hands thrust deep into the pockets of his dark trousers. He didn't blink. He didn't grimace. He merely observed the scene with the clinical detachment of a general reviewing a familiar battlefield.

Behind him, Emma stood wrapped in a heavy wool coat Marcus had tossed over her shoulders. When she saw the name carved into the frost, her breath caught in her throat. Her real name. Valerie Laurent. Not Emma, the fabricated maid identity she had purchased on the dark web, nor Emma Thorne, the socialite mask she wore during her brief Italian marriage to Julian.

Valerie. The name she had abandoned when she was nineteen years old, buried under forged French birth certificates and erased by an offshore fire.

""Who calls you Valerie?"" Julian asked, his voice smooth, devoid of inflection.

""Nobody,"" Emma whispered, her hands balling into fists inside the oversized coat pockets. ""Nobody alive.""

""Evidently, that assessment is flawed,"" Julian remarked. He turned slowly on his heel, fixing her with a gaze so sharp it felt like an incision. ""The security cameras in this corridor looped precisely fourteen minutes ago. That requires a biometric bypass code only five people in the Western Hemisphere possess. Beatrice is not one of them.""

""Then who?"" Marcus asked, his hand hovering over the Glock holstered beneath his tailored suit jacket. ""Boss, should I lock down the building? Put every security team on maximum alert?""

""No,"" Julian replied calmly. ""Whoever did this didn't come to kill Gerard. They killed him to send a message. A very specific, very expensive invitation.""

Julian walked forward until he was standing directly in front of the dead chef. With bare fingers, disregarding the frost and gore, he reached out and flicked open the lapel of Gerard’s blood-soaked white tunic. Tucked neatly into the breast pocket, completely pristine and dry, was a black, heavy-stock paper card.

Julian pulled it free with two fingers. Emblazoned in gold foil across the front was an emblem: a serpent entwined around a shattered hourglass.

Emma’s breath froze in her lungs. Her pupils dilated with visceral terror. ""The Ouroboros Syndicate,"" she murmured, stumbling half a step backward. ""They were behind the crash in Monte Carlo. They weren't trying to kill me, Julian. They were trying to kill us.""

Julian turned the card over. On the back, written in elegant calligraphy with gold ink, was a single line of text:

Bring the girl to the St. Regis ballroom tomorrow night, Mr. Thorne. Or we detonate the cargo ships docked at Pier 42.

""Pier 42,"" Marcus gasped, his face draining of color. ""Boss, that’s the humanitarian shipment destined for the Mediterranean refugee corridors. There are five hundred tons of high-grade fertilizer and industrial nitrates sitting in those hulls. If they blow Pier 42, half of lower Manhattan gets leveled.""

Julian looked down at the gold lettering, his expression remaining completely placid. Only the slight tightening of the muscles along his jaw betrayed the monstrous calculation occurring behind his eyes.

""They don't want the ships,"" Julian said softly. He looked up, locking his gaze onto Emma. ""They want the biometric key Arthur Vance hid inside the only family member he couldn't control.""

Emma shook her head violently. ""Arthur never gave me anything! He hated me! He disowned me the day I ran away from Paris!""

Julian took two slow strides toward her. He closed the distance until Emma could feel the heat radiating from his broad chest, overpowering the biting chill of the walk-in freezer.

""Arthur didn't give it to you in an envelope, Valerie,"" Julian murmured, reaching out and gently touching the base of her neck, right along the scar running beneath her hairline—a scar she had told him in Florence was the result of a childhood riding accident.

His fingertips pressed against a tiny, hard nodule nestled deep within the scar tissue behind her mastoid bone. A nodule Emma had carried for fifteen years, completely unaware of what it truly was.

""He implanted it,"" Julian whispered, a dark, wicked smile curving the edge of his mouth. ""A micro-transponder carrying the master encryption keys to the Laurent-Vance maritime empire. Arthur didn't trust Beatrice. He didn't trust me. He trusted the daughter he knew would survive anything he threw at her.""

Emma stepped back, her hand flying up to cover the back of her neck, her skin crawling with a sudden surge of paranoia. ""You knew? All this time, even when we were in Italy... you knew what was inside my head?""

""I married you for it,"" Julian stated without an ounce of remorse or hesitation. ""Love was simply an unexpected, inconvenient distraction.""

Before Emma could scream, before she could raise a hand to strike the aristocratic arrogance from his face, the harsh red emergency lights inside the freezer suddenly flashed to life. A deafening siren wailed throughout the subterranean complex.

The heavy steel freezer door slammed shut with the force of a hydraulic vault, locking them inside.

From the wall speaker above the dead chef, Beatrice’s triumphant voice crackled over the intercom:

""Goodnight, Julian. Enjoy freezing to death with your little kitchen whore. The ballroom is mine.""
