Chapter 3 - The Cold Basement

Darkness claimed Emma in waves of suffocating cold. The burning fire in her veins dulled to an aching, rhythmic throb, and when her eyes finally fluttered open, the glittering crystal chandeliers and warm amber glow of the penthouse were gone.

Above her stretched a ceiling of raw, unfinished concrete crossed by damp iron pipes. The air was frigid, thick with the stench of industrial bleach, limestone dust, and old motor oil.

Emma exhaled, watching a faint puff of condensation dissipate into the shadows. She tried to move her hands, but a sharp metallic clink answered her effort. Cold steel cuffs bound her wrists behind the back of a heavy wooden chair. Her maid’s apron was gone; she wore only the thin black uniform dress, its fabric offering zero protection against the basement draft.

""You took twenty-two minutes to regain consciousness,"" a voice announced from the perimeter of darkness.

A strike of a match illuminated Julian Thorne’s sharp profile. The yellow flame flared against his high cheekbones, reflecting off the dark iris of his eyes before he touched it to the tip of a thin cigarillo. He blew a stream of pale blue smoke toward the concrete ceiling.

He had shed his tuxedo jacket. His black dress shirt was unbuttoned three notches down, sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dense clusters of dark tattoos—intricate maritime coordinates, Latin phrases, and scarred flesh that told the real story of how the Thorne family built its dynasty.

""Where... am I?"" Emma’s voice sounded shredded, her throat raw from the caustic poison Julian had flushed with the antidote.

""Sub-level four of the Thorne Tower,"" Julian said, stepping into the dim circle of overhead light. He dragged a metal folding chair across the floor with a screech that sent needles through Emma’s eardrums, setting it down directly in front of her. He sat, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. ""No cell reception. No cameras. No Beatrice.""

""You... cured me,"" Emma croaked, blinking against the glare of the bare bulb hanging above her head.

""I kept you alive,"" Julian corrected coldly. ""There is a distinct difference. Dead bodies can't answer interrogations.""

Emma let out a ragged, dry laugh that turned into a cough. ""Still as romantic as our wedding night in Florence.""

Julian’s jaw tightened. For a fraction of a second, the aristocratic detachment cracked, revealing a deep, subterranean fury. He reached forward and grabbed her chin in an iron grip, tilting her face up toward the harsh bulb. His thumb pressed harshly into the tender flesh beneath her jaw.

""Florence is dead,"" Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low. ""The girl I married in Florence died when the brakes failed on her Maserati, plunging three hundred feet into the rocky surf. I buried an empty casket, Emma. I wore black for six months while the press called me an unstable widower. And then tonight, three years later, you appear in my dining room wearing an apron, swallowing aconite like a martyr.""

""I didn't do it to save you,"" Emma hissed through gritted teeth, refusing to break eye contact despite the tears pricking her eyelids from his bruising grip. ""I did it because if you died tonight, Beatrice’s father takes over the Thorne syndicate. And if Arthur Vance takes over, I never get what he stole from me.""

Julian paused. His thumb loosened slightly, though he didn't pull his hand away. ""What did Arthur take from you?""

""My brother,"" Emma said, her voice dropping into a lethal, steady whisper. ""He didn't die in the military tribunal, Julian. Arthur kept him alive. He’s holding him in an offshore black site in Montenegro, using him to blackmail what’s left of my family's shipping lines.""

Julian studied her face. He was an expert at reading micro-expressions; he had spent a decade outmaneuvering cartel bosses and corporate sharks. He looked for the telltale signs of deception: a flickering gaze, a hitch in breathing, a dilated pupil. He found none. Only pure, burning hatred.

He slowly pulled his hand back, resting it against his thigh.

""Arthur Vance died this morning in a private clinic in Zurich,"" Julian said flatly.

Emma’s heart slammed against her ribs. The world tilted beneath her. ""What?""

""Cardiac arrest. Officially,"" Julian said, watching her intently. ""Unofficially, someone spiked his IV with potassium chloride. Which means your brother’s location died with him—unless someone else has the offshore coordinates.""

""Beatrice,"" Emma breathed, the cold horror settling deep into her stomach. ""She took over his encrypted files. That’s why she wanted you dead tonight. She needed your shipping routes to liquidate the offshore assets before the Thorne board could intervene.""

Julian stared at her for a long moment, then reached behind him. He produced a set of keys and unlocked the handcuffs binding her wrists. The steel fell to the concrete with a heavy clatter.

Emma rubbed her bruised skin, stunned. ""You’re letting me go?""

""No,"" Julian said, standing up and towering over her like a dark monument. ""You’re going back to the penthouse. Tomorrow night, Beatrice is hosting a charity gala in my ballroom to celebrate our supposed upcoming nuptials. You will serve the champagne. And when she goes to access the encrypted terminal in my private study...""

Julian leaned down until his lips brushed Emma’s ear once more.

""You’re going to help me skin her alive. But if you try to run, Emma, I will put you back in that burning car myself.""

Before Emma could answer, the heavy steel security door at the top of the basement stairs groaned open. Heavy footsteps echoed downward, accompanied by the panicked breathing of Julian’s head of security.

""Boss,"" Marcus called out, his voice laced with uncharacteristic tension. ""We have a problem. The sous-chef who prepared the scallop... we just found him in the cold storage.""

Julian didn't turn around. ""Did you secure his phone?""

""He didn't have his phone,"" Marcus said, stopping at the edge of the light, his face pale. ""Someone cut his throat from ear to ear, boss. And on the wall above his body, they wrote her maiden name in blood.""
