Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Vault

The internal temperature of the industrial walk-in freezer was dropping rapidly. A digital display near the reinforced steel hatch flashed red: -15°C, then -18°C. Cold air hissed from the overhead ventilation grates, billowing like thick white fog across the concrete floor.
Marcus slammed his shoulder against the heavy door, throwing his full two-hundred-pound weight into the handle. The hydraulic locking mechanism didn't even rattle.
""It’s an emergency override,"" Marcus grunted, his breath billowing in white clouds. He unholstered his Glock and aimed directly at the electronic keypad beside the frame.
""Don't shoot,"" Julian commanded, his voice razor-sharp and steady. ""The casing is reinforced titanium. A ricochet will kill one of us, and the sparks will ignite the vaporized freon leaking from those coolant lines.""
Marcus lowered the weapon, stepping back, rubbing his frozen hands together. ""Boss, the auxiliary air shuts off automatically during a biohazard lockdown. We have maybe twelve minutes of breathable air before carbon dioxide poisoning settles in. Beatrice must have triggered the code from the security hub on the eighty-second floor.""
Emma leaned against a stainless-steel preparation table, her teeth chattering uncontrollably. Her fingers had already gone completely numb, the tips turning a pale, waxy blue. The sheer physical trauma of the aconite poison from earlier was resurfacing, sapping her energy, making her limbs feel filled with lead.
Julian looked down at her. Without a word, he stripped off his dark wool overcoat and draped it around her trembling frame. The heavy fabric carried his lingering warmth and the faint aroma of tobacco and cedar.
""Save your chivalry,"" Emma gasped through trembling teeth, wrapping the coat tightly around herself despite her words. ""You just admitted... you married me... for a piece of hardware... in my neck.""
Julian stepped closer, towering over her. He crouched down until his dark eyes were level with hers. ""I am a pragmatist, Valerie. When I made you my wife, I secured an empire. But do not confuse business with indifference. If I wanted you dead, I would have let you choke on that scallop.""
""You used me,"" she whispered, a tear freezing against her cheek.
""I kept you alive,"" he countered softly. ""When the Ouroboros Syndicate wired your Maserati to explode three years ago, who do you think rerouted the local fire brigade? Who do you think fished your half-drowned body out of the Mediterranean before the Syndicate's cleanup crew could put two bullets in the back of your head?""
Emma’s breath hitched. She stared into his cold, unblinking eyes. ""What?""
""I couldn't protect you in Florence,"" Julian confessed, the mask of supreme arrogance slipping for just a fraction of a second, revealing the bottomless abyss of darkness underneath. ""My own board had betrayed me. My uncle was funneling weapons through our shipping routes. If the Syndicate knew you survived the crash, they would have sawed your skull open to get that transponder. So I made the world believe you were ash. I let you run. I let you build your pathetic little alias as Emma the kitchen maid.""
Emma felt a dizzying wave of disorientation wash over her. ""You... you knew where I was? This whole time?""
""Every second of every day,"" Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. ""I bought the tenement building you lived in. I paid off your landlord. I ensured the diner you worked at in Brooklyn never failed its health inspections. And when you applied for a position in my personal kitchen three months ago, who do you think approved the background check without a single red flag?""
""Boss,"" Marcus interrupted, his voice strained, coughing hoarsely. ""Oxygen levels are hitting critical. My vision is tunneling.""
Julian stood up smoothly, the fleeting glimpse of human emotion vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. He turned toward the industrial air intake shaft mounted high on the back wall of the freezer.
""Marcus. The service hoist,"" Julian ordered. ""The intake shaft feeds directly into the pneumatic freight elevator behind the banquet kitchens. It’s reinforced against external breaches, but the interior ventilation dampers are aluminum.""
Marcus looked up at the vent, twelve feet above the floor. ""The opening is less than fourteen inches wide. I won't fit. And with your shoulders, boss, you’ll get wedged at the first ninety-degree bend.""
Julian turned his gaze slowly toward Emma.
Emma shook her head, pulling the coat tighter. ""No. Absolutely not.""
""You want Beatrice dead?"" Julian asked, extending an open hand toward her. ""You want the coordinates to the black site in Montenegro where your brother is rotting in an iron cell? Then get into that vent, Valerie. Crawl sixty feet through the exhaust flue, trip the manual fire alarm on the exterior junction box, and open this damn door.""
Emma looked at his outstretched hand. The long, scarred fingers; the silver signet ring bearing the Thorne family crest. She hated him with every fiber of her being, but she knew with lethal certainty that he was the only monster capable of burning down the other monsters hunting them.
She placed her hand in his.
Julian hoisted her up onto his shoulders with effortless power. Emma reached up, her numb fingers clawing at the screws holding the aluminum grate. With a desperate surge of adrenaline, she jammed the silver fork she had slipped into her apron pocket into the edge of the vent cover, wrenching the metal bracket until the rivets popped with a screech.
She squeezed her body into the dark, freezing metal tunnel, the air tearing at her throat.
""Valerie,"" Julian called from below, his voice sounding hollow inside the shaft.
She looked back down through the opening. Julian stood looking up at her, his silhouette sharp against the frost-covered stainless steel.
""Don't go to the junction box first,"" he said.
May you like
Emma frowned. ""What?""
""Beatrice isn't alone up there,"" Julian warned, his eyes flashing with a predatory gleam. ""She has the Syndicate's primary assassin waiting in the service corridors. If you make a sound before you reach the master breakers, you won't even have time to scream.""
