Chapter 1 - The Weight of Velvet Chains

The raindrops fell like icy needles against Elena’s skin, soaking through the shoulders of her tailored cream-white blazer. Behind her, the heavy oak doors of the Sterling estate shut with a final, hollow thud. Inside stood Julian, her husband of seven years, smiling beside Clara—the golden-haired heiress whose round belly carried his supposed heir. Julian had handed her an envelope stuffed with crisp hundred-dollar bills, treating her like an inconvenient tenant evicted on short notice. ""Find a hotel, Elena. My mother has decided,"" he had sneered.
She had let the envelope fall onto the wet pavement without a word. Elena pulled her silver rolling suitcase across the flooded stone path toward the waiting black Maybach. The Sterling family had forgotten who funded their venture capital empire, who cleared their debts, and whose grandmother had signed the original land deed for the very mansion Julian stood in.
Marcus, her private chauffeur and former military detail, opened a massive black umbrella over her head. ""Ma'am,"" he murmured softly.
""They changed the master codes on the gate, Marcus,"" Elena said, her voice dropping to a calm, deadly whisper as she stepped into the leather warmth of the sedan. She dabbed the rainwater from her eyelashes with a silk handkerchief. Tears had threatened to spill at first, but now only cold fire burned beneath her ribs.
She unlocked her encrypted tablet, bringing up the global asset registry for the Vance Consortium. Her true family lineage was something she had hidden to give Julian a simple, honest marriage. He had chosen pride and greed instead.
""Contact Arthur at once,"" Elena commanded, dialing her lead corporate counsel on speakerphone. ""Tell him to prepare the original deed to the Northridge estate. Tomorrow morning, I want Julian’s corporate credit accounts frozen, his executive clearance revoked, and every single trust fund tied to my grandmother’s name terminated.""
On the other end of the line, Arthur's voice was grim yet sharp. ""Understood, Ms. Vance. And what about the Sterling Group's offshore bank guarantees?""
Elena stared out into the dark storm. ""Default on them. Let the wolves smell blood.""
She hung up, leaning back against the headrest. The Maybach glided smoothly into the night, leaving behind the illuminated facade of the manor. But just as the car turned onto the main highway, her phone buzzed with an emergency alert from the private medical clinic where she had secretly undergone blood tests just three days prior.

Elena swiped open the notification. The medical report read in bold red letters: HCG positive. Twin gestation detected.
Elena gasped, her hand instinctively pressing against her flat stomach as the rain hammered against the glass.
