Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

By midday, the financial district was engulfed in total chaos. News outlets blasted ticker tapes across every digital billboard: STERLING GROUP COLLAPSE: CEO JULIAN STERLING ACCUSED OF SYSTEMIC EMBEZZLEMENT AND FORGERY.

Julian sat in the cramped back room of his attorney's office, his collar undone, smelling of stale sweat and cheap bourbon. The elegant suit he had worn the night before was wrinkled and covered in rain spots.

""Bankruptcy is your only option, Julian,"" his lawyer, Harrison, said blunt as a hammer. ""Elena Vance isn't just an ex-wife with a grudge. She is the principal shareholder of the trust that owns eighty percent of your company's commercial debt. She literally owns the ground your factories stand on.""

""She tricked me!"" Julian roared, slamming both fists onto the desk. ""She pretended to be nobody! She let my family treat her like charity for seven years!""

""And you treated her like dirt,"" Harrison replied calmly, adjusting his glasses. ""The law doesn't care about your bruised ego. Dominic Romanov’s enforcers arrived at your corporate headquarters two hours ago. They've placed an armed lien on every fleet vehicle you possess. If you don't produce sixty million dollars by tomorrow evening, they will initiate a hostile liquidation.""

Julian felt the room closing in on him. His mother had refused to answer his calls after having an anxiety attack at her country club, and Clara was holed up in a five-star hotel room, charging luxury room service to a credit card that was going to bounce any minute.

""There has to be another way,"" Julian whispered, clutching his temples. ""What about Clara's family? The Aldridges are billionaires!""

Harrison offered a pathetic, pitying smile. ""Clara's father issued a public press release thirty minutes ago. He has disowned her, canceled her trust allowances, and announced that any child she bears out of wedlock with a disgraced felon will receive zero inheritance from the Aldridge estate.""

Julian’s breath hitched. He had traded Elena—loyal, quiet, brilliant Elena—for Clara's supposed billions, only to end up with a penniless mistress and a mountain of catastrophic debt.

Suddenly, Julian’s phone rang. It was an unknown private number. He scrambled for it, hoping against hope. ""Hello?""

""Julian,"" Elena’s voice came through the line, crystal clear, utterly devoid of emotion.

""Elena! Honey, listen to me!"" Julian sputtered, desperation choking his words. ""This was all a misunderstanding! Clara meant nothing to me, my mother forced my hand! You know how she is! Please, come home, let's talk about this like adults!""

""I am home, Julian,"" Elena replied softly. ""In my home. Where your belongings have already been tossed into the landfill.""

""Elena, please! Don't do this to our marriage! We can start over!""

""I called to give you one single piece of advice,"" she said, her voice chilling his marrow. ""Pack light. Because tonight, the storm reaches your mother’s door.""

The line went dead.
