Chapter 11 - The Phantom Vault

Elena stared out at the shimmering Mediterranean water, the phone still pressed against her ear. The warm sea breeze suddenly felt like winter ice against her neck.
""Arthur,"" she commanded, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. ""Lock down all communication channels. Route everything through the quantum-encrypted server in Geneva. If that payment used my father’s personal cypher, someone has breached our innermost archives—or my father was never on that yacht.""
""I’m already scrubbing the trail,"" Arthur responded. ""But there’s more. An hour after the hospice transfer went through, a safety deposit box at the Bank of Zurich—one that doesn't appear on any Vance balance sheet—was accessed using a biometric print registered to Richard Vance.""
Elena’s breath hitched. Julian had thought he was looting her family vault when he went after the art collection, completely unaware of the layers of secret accounts her bloodline possessed. But a biometric-locked vault under her father’s name? Her grandfather had sworn her father died instantly in the explosion off the coast of Sicily.
""Did they take anything?"" she demanded.
""The bank manager refused to give details over the wire, but he confirmed a single sealed leather dispatch case was removed,"" Arthur said. ""And the courier who carried it out just boarded a private flight bound for Naples.""
Naples was less than an hour's drive from her villa in Amalfi.
Elena hung up and called Marcus inside immediately. ""Marcus. We have a tier-one security breach. We are initiating the fortress protocol.""
Marcus didn't ask questions. His military instincts took over in a heartbeat. Within three minutes, the villa's heavy steel shutters rolled down over the panoramic windows, locking the compound into an impenetrable fortress. Armed guards moved into tactical positions along the cliffside gardens.
Elena walked into her private study, pulling open a hidden compartment behind a Renaissance painting. Inside lay an old wooden box that had belonged to her grandfather. She lifted the velvet lining to reveal an antique silver pocket watch. On the inner casing, engraved in delicate script, were coordinates and a date—today's date.

Before she could process the realization, the villa's perimeter alarms sounded a low, rhythmic chime.
Marcus’s voice crackled over her earpiece. ""Ma'am. A single black vehicle has stopped at the outer gate. Unarmed driver. He just placed a leather dispatch case in the security drop-box and drove away.""
