Chapter 9 - The Broken Crown

The federal detention center was a gray, concrete tomb smelling of industrial bleach and defeat. Julian sat behind the reinforced glass partition, wearing an orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with his pale, sunken face. His wavy hair was unwashed, and the smug charm that had once defined him had disintegrated into raw, trembling anxiety.

On the other side of the glass, Victoria sat in a faded wool coat she had purchased from a thrift store using emergency government assistance vouchers. Her hands shook violently as she lifted the plastic telephone receiver.

""Julian,"" she wept, pressing her wrinkled forehead against the glass. ""They took everything. The country club canceled my membership. The ladies from the garden guild crossed the street when they saw me waiting for the bus. We have nothing left. Not a single cent.""

""Mother, shut up!"" Julian snapped into the phone, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. ""Where is Clara? Did she contact her father? Did she post my bail?""

Victoria let out a bitter, raspy laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping pavement. ""Clara went to an abortion clinic this morning, Julian.""

Julian’s breath stopped. ""What?""

""Her father offered to take her back into the family under one condition,"" Victoria whispered, tears carving clean lines through the dirt on her aged cheeks. ""She had to terminate your child. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She signed the papers and flew to Paris this afternoon on her father's private jet.""

Julian stared at his mother, his soul hollowing out until there was nothing left inside him. Clara had discarded his child like garbage just to regain her credit cards. The very heir he had traded his entire life and empire for had ceased to exist before even taking a breath.

""And Elena?"" Julian croaked, his voice cracking. ""What is Elena doing?""

Victoria’s eyes filled with venomous despair. ""Elena is currently the most celebrated woman in the country. Vance Holdings bought the remnants of Sterling Group for pennies on the dollar this morning. She rebranded the entire conglomerate under her grandmother’s foundation. They say she’s worth billions now.""

Julian slammed the receiver against the metal counter, sobbing violently into his shackled hands. The guards immediately moved in, pinning his shoulders and hauling him backward toward the cell blocks as his screams echoed through the visiting hall.

Meanwhile, seventy floors above the city, Elena stood on her private terrace. The night air was crisp and clear, the rainstorm having finally passed to reveal a blanket of glittering stars.

Arthur stepped onto the balcony, holding a legal folder. ""It's done, Elena. Julian's bail was denied. He faces fifteen charges. He won't see daylight until he’s in his late fifties.""

""And the Sterling legacy?"" she asked quietly.

""Erased,"" Arthur answered. ""Every factory, every logo, every asset has been absorbed into the Vance charitable trust.""

Elena nodded slowly, placing a protective hand over her belly. ""Good. Now, Arthur... prepare the paperwork for my indefinite leave of absence.""

May you like

Arthur looked surprised. ""A leave of absence? The market is begging for your public appearances. You just executed the most brilliant corporate takeover in modern history.""

Elena turned to him, the faint hint of a genuine smile gracing her lips for the first time in years. ""My work here is finished. Now, I have an entirely different future to protect.""
