Chapter 4 - The Fall of False Pride

Julian stood barefoot on the damp lawn, watched in humiliation by neighboring socialites walking their dogs. Clara was sobbing uncontrollably into a cashmere scarf, while moving men tossed Julian’s designer suits into cardboard boxes on the curb.
""Call your mother!"" Clara shrieked, clutching her swollen belly. ""Julian, do something! The reporters are already at the gate!""
Julian scrambled to dial his mother’s direct line. After four agonizing rings, Victoria Sterling picked up, her voice breathless and frantic. ""Julian! Where are you? What is happening at the bank?""
""Mother, marshals just kicked us out of the house!"" Julian shouted into the receiver. ""They claim Elena owns the deed!""
""Forget the house!"" Victoria screamed, losing her usual aristocratic composure entirely. ""Our corporate accounts are emptied! The credit lines are frozen! The board just called an emergency meeting—they’re replacing you as CEO! The share price is plummeting fifty percent by the second! Did you touch her money? Julian, answer me!""
Julian dropped the phone onto the grass. The screen cracked. The ground seemed to tilt beneath his feet. The meek, compliant woman who had cooked his dinners, ironed his shirts, and endured his mother’s sneering remarks for seven years had pulled the foundation right out from under his life in less than eight hours.
Meanwhile, in the private glass conservatory on the top floor of Vance Tower, Elena sat across from Dominic Romanov. Dominic was a formidable man in his early forties, with graying temples, a scar cutting through his left eyebrow, and an aura of quiet violence that made seasoned politicians tremble.
""You look well, Elena,"" Dominic said, sipping black espresso from a porcelain cup. ""Though I hear your domestic life took an unfortunate turn last night.""
""Julian used my forged signature to borrow sixty million from your syndicate,"" Elena said without preamble, slicing neatly into a fresh strawberry. ""He told you the Zurich vault was his.""
Dominic’s cold eyes glinted with dark amusement. ""My financial officers were careless. When I saw your family crest on the application this morning, I nearly put a bullet through my underboss's skull myself.""
""I don't care about your underboss, Dominic,"" Elena said, meeting his gaze directly. ""I want Julian's loan called immediately. No extensions. No grace period. Demand full repayment within forty-eight hours.""
Dominic set his cup down. ""And when he inevitably fails to pay?""
Elena leaned forward, her eyes freezing the air between them. ""Take his personal assets. His cars, his yacht, his shareholdings in Sterling Logistics. Strip him down to his skin. But leave his mother's ancestral townhouse intact for now.""

Dominic smiled—a predatory grin. ""Why spare the townhouse?""
""Because,"" Elena whispered coldly, ""I want them to watch the rest of their world burn from inside a cage they can't afford to heat.""
