Chapter 12 - Letters from the Dead

Marcus retrieved the case, subjecting it to chemical, explosive, and electronic scans before bringing it into Elena’s private study. The leather was aged, smelling faintly of pipe tobacco and cedar—the unmistakable scent of her childhood.
Elena took a deep breath, steadying her hands as she rested them over her rounded belly. The twins kicked gently, as if sensing the gravity of the moment. She slid the brass latches open.
Inside lay a collection of yellowed documents, a digital encryption key, and a handwritten letter addressed to My Dearest Elena.
The handwriting was unmistakably her father's.
Elena sank into the leather armchair, unfolding the paper with trembling fingers.
My darling girl, the letter began. If you are reading this, it means you have reclaimed your birthright and the vultures who sought to drain the Vance legacy have begun to fall. It also means you are carrying the next generation.
Elena’s eyes filled with tears. How could he have known?
Fifteen years ago, I discovered that the Sterling family was not just an incompetent aristocratic clan. Julian’s father, Edward Sterling, was part of a syndicate that orchestrated the sabotage of my vessel. They wanted Vance Holdings broken into pieces so their private cartel could swallow our shipping lanes. I survived the blast, but I realized that as long as I lived openly, you would remain their ultimate target.
I chose exile so you could grow up in the shadows, safe and untouchable until your grandfather prepared you to take the throne. But Julian’s marriage to you was never a coincidence. His mother, Victoria, recognized your lineage years ago. They married you to slowly bleed your trusts dry through legal loopholes.
Elena’s heart hardened into solid obsidian. Julian’s courtship, his declarations of love, his mother’s calculated psychological abuse—it had all been an orchestrated, generational siege to steal her heritage. Julian had kicked her into the rain not just because of Clara, but because he believed he had finally secured enough forged documents to eliminate her permanently.
The letter continued: The man who funded Edward Sterling thirty years ago is still alive. His name is Victor Vance—my estranged brother, your uncle. He controls the syndicate from the shadows of London. And now that you have destroyed Julian, Victor will come for you himself.

At the bottom of the page, a final line sent a chill down Elena’s spine:
Look out the window, Elena. I never truly left.
