Chapter 10 - Shadows Across the Ocean

Four months had passed. The Mediterranean sun cast a golden glow across the private cliffs of Amalfi, where a secluded villa stood perched above the azure waves. The scent of blooming lemon trees and sea salt drifted through the open white terrace doors.

Elena Vance stood by the railing, wearing a loose linen dress that gently accentuated the visible swell of her twin pregnancy. Her skin was glowing, free of the toxic stress that had weighed her down during her marriage. Here, under private security and medical supervision, she had found peace.

Marcus remained stationed at the perimeter, ensuring that not a single journalist or investigator came within five miles of the estate.

Elena sipped freshly squeezed orange juice as she reviewed Vance Holdings' quarterly reports. The company was thriving under Arthur's interim management. Everything was running smoothly, exactly as she had designed.

Suddenly, her secure satellite phone chimed. It was Arthur’s private line.

""Elena,"" Arthur’s voice sounded unusually tense. ""I apologize for disturbing your retreat, but something unexpected has surfaced.""

Elena set her glass down, her senses instantly sharpening. ""Report, Arthur.""

""Julian’s sentencing trial concluded yesterday. He received twenty-two years without parole,"" Arthur began. ""He is headed to a maximum-security penitentiary. But that isn't why I’m calling.""

""Go on.""

""Victoria Sterling was found unconscious near the docks three days ago. Someone paid for her admission into an elite private hospice under an anonymous offshore trust,"" Arthur said, his tone darkening. ""We traced the funding. It didn't come from Julian, and Clara's family hasn't touched them.""

Elena’s brow furrowed. ""Who paid for it?""

""The money originated from an account belonging to the late Richard Vance... your father,"" Arthur answered quietly.

Elena felt the ground shift beneath her feet. Her father had died in a tragic yacht explosion when she was just twelve years old—an event that had shattered her family and forced her grandfather to hide her identity for her own safety.

""That's impossible,"" Elena said, her voice dropping into cold disbelief. ""My father’s accounts were settled and archived over fifteen years ago. Every dollar was accounted for.""

""That's what we believed,"" Arthur replied. ""Until this transfer cleared. And Elena... the transfer note attached to the hospital payment had a message written in your father’s personal cypher code.""

Elena’s heart began to race. ""What did the message say?""

""It said: Protect the twins. The storm didn't end with Julian.""
