Chapter 6 - Eviction of the Matriarch

Victoria Sterling had always prided herself on being the reigning queen of High Society. Her ancestral townhouse was filled with antique chandeliers, priceless European oil paintings, and monogrammed silverware passed down through generations. She sat on her velvet chaise lounge, sipping valium-laced tea, convincing herself that Julian would sort out the ""clerical error"" regarding their finances.
Then, the heavy front doors were kicked open.
Victoria gasped, dropping her porcelain cup. The tea shattered across the Persian rug. Four men dressed in black tactical suits stepped inside, followed by a woman in a charcoal bespoke pantsuit and pointed stilettos that echoed on the marble floors.
It was Elena.
Behind Elena walked two city bailiffs and an auction appraiser holding an electronic inventory pad.
""What is the meaning of this insolence?"" Victoria shrieked, rising to her feet, though her knees wobbled violently. ""Elena, you ungrateful little wretch! How dare you bring thugs into my home!""
Elena did not even look at her. She walked past the older woman toward a magnificent 18th-century oil portrait of Victoria’s late husband hanging above the grand fireplace.
""Take this down,"" Elena instructed the workers casually. ""It's listed as item forty-two on the seizure manifest.""
""Stop touching my things!"" Victoria screamed, rushing forward, but Marcus stepped between them like an immovable wall of iron. Victoria recoiled in terror from Marcus's lethal glare.
""This is not your home, Victoria,"" Elena said, turning slowly with her hands resting gracefully in her pockets. ""Your late husband mortgaged this property to Vance Holdings thirty years ago to cover his gambling debts in Monaco. My grandfather granted your family a lifelong lease out of pity. But leases require adherence to character clauses.""
""You... you lie!"" Victoria stammered, clutching her pearls with trembling, spotted hands.
Elena took a paper from Arthur and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. ""Paragraph twelve. Any public scandal or criminal charge involving the tenant voids the lease immediately. Julian was formally indicted thirty minutes ago for corporate forgery and cross-border bank fraud.""
Victoria’s face turned gray. ""No... no, my Julian wouldn't...""
""The moving vans are outside, Victoria,"" Elena whispered, stepping close enough for the older woman to smell her fresh jasmine perfume. ""You made me stand in the pouring rain last night and told me to find a hotel. Fortunately for you, I’ve already reserved a room for you.""

Elena dropped a crumpled twenty-dollar bill at Victoria's feet.
""The homeless shelter on 4th Street opens its doors at sunset. I suggest you hurry before the beds fill up.""
